Do Deutsch Festival brings German art, culture to campus

Do you Deutsch?  We hope you do, and that you do it this week at the Do Deutsch Festival, Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 25-27, a campus-wide celebration of all things German: language, culture, food and art.

If you’re not familiar with the German language, “Deut

sch” means “German” — as in “Sprechen Sie Deutsch?” (“Do you speak German?”) or “Deutschland” (Germany), or “I would love me some tasty Deutsch bratwurst.”   The Federal Republic of Germany, via its Washington and L.A. embassies, is sponsoring Chapman’s Do Deutsch Festival, which is being presented by Chapman’s Center for Global Education.  There will be fun events on campus all three days, culminating in a German Arts and Film Evening on Thursday night.

Here’s the lineup – all events occur in the Great Room, Student Union, Argyros Forum.

Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1-5 p.m.  – Schnitzeljagd (Scavenger Hunt): Participate in a scavenger hunt around campus, using clues to help identify various German cities.

Wednesday, Oct. 26. 8-10 p.m. – Game Night: Come try your hand at typical German games to win prizes, and enjoy some German food!

Thursday, Oct. 27, 3-5 p.m. – German Business Fair:  German businesses will host tables to offer networking opportunities for students, in partnership with the Career Development Center and the Argyros School of Business and Economics.

And the grand finale:

Thursday, Oct. 27, 7-11 p.m. – German Evening of the Arts and Film Night:  The Do Deutsch Festival’s Evening of the Arts kicks off at 7 p.m. in Argyros Forum with an opening reception for acclaimed artist Fitz Maurice, whose exhibition “BERLIN: Metamorphosis” opens tonight and is on display through January in the Great Room. A resident of Laguna Beach, the internationally renowned artist was living and painting in Germany when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. Her extraordinarily powerful paintings, on display to the public through this Chapman exhibition, document that remarkable time and its unforgettable effects on the city and its people. Delicious German foods will be served!

The art opening is followed by a screening of the new German movie “Westwind” (2011). The movie follows a pair of 17-year-old twins, Doreen and Isabel, from rural East Germany. The two are successful oarswomen practicing hard to be accepted at a renowned boarding school for athletes. In 1988, a year before the Berlin Wall comes down, they have the chance to spend the summer at Lake Balaton in the Soviet satellite state of Hungary. Already on their way to the young pioneer camp, the twins meet a group of young men from the West German city of Hamburg.  For the first time, the sisters don´t share everything, and need to make the most momentous decision of their lives. The director, Robert Thalheim, will be in attendance.

All events are FREE and open to the public and all members of the Chapman community.
