The Chapman University Speech and Debate Team closed out the academic year with the Top University Sweepstakes Award at the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association Cool Off Tournament held at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif. This is the most recent accolade in the long list of the team’s successes from this year.

Communication studies instructor and team director Lyndsey Christoffersen, Ph.D., explained that the team is small but mighty. “We placed in the top 3 in almost every tournament we attended. The team graduated a lot of very successful seniors last academic year, so it seemed like 2013-14 would be a rebuilding year for our program. But we’ve just had our most successful year yet.”

In addition to their local success, Chapman placed 16th at the prestigious Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament held in Indianapolis, Ind. There, the team was truly “small but mighty,” bringing a total of 18 events to the tournament and breaking 11 to the quarterfinals. Highlights included Timothy Seavey and Shelby Stanton achieving the highest debate ranking in the Chapman team’s history, and Seavey receiving third place in both Communication Analysis and Extemporaneous Speaking. The nationals squad included Katie Henderson, Jasmine Johnson, Timothy Seavey, and Shelby Stanton.
