Mark Axelrod, Ph.D., professor, Department of English, and director of the John Fowles Center for Creative Writing, Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, has had his recent screenplay, Chicago Bares, accepted as a finalist the Best Feature Screenplay of the Chicago International Film Festival.

Hesham El-Askary, Ph.D., associate professor, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Schmid College of Science and Technology, presented a paper at the AOGS 11th Annual Meeting, in Sapporo, Japan, this summer titled “Saharan Dust Possible Impact on the Formation of Hurricane Sandy.”

Steven D. Gjerstad, Ph.D., presidential fellow, and Vernon L. Smith, Ph.D., professor, Economic Science Institute and 2002 Nobel laureate in economic science, have published a new book, Rethinking Housing bubbles: The Role of Household and Bank Balance Sheets in Modeling Economic Cycles. Published by Cambridge University Press, this original work examines both laboratory and real markets and combines historic analysis from the Great Depression onward to gain new insights into the housing crisis.

Essraa Nawar, Leatherby Libraries development coordinator, presented a paper titled “Library Annual Reports Made Easy” at the 2014 Annual American Library Association Conference, Las Vegas, Nev.

Todd Plesco, director of information security and cyber security expert, was recently interviewed by CBS reporter Stacey Butler for a feature on data usage implications for sites like OKCupid and Facebook. Both sites have recently been in the news for OK Cupid’s low mismatching percentages of its customers and Facebook’s marketing experiments with its news feeds.
