Three Years of Photo Booths
Nathan Photo Booths-1

Nathan has been doing photo booths at Chapman since his sophomore year. He sees doing photos as a way to capture what really matters about the college experience. See a collection of photos from events at Chapman over the last three years.Read More ▶

I was at midnight brekfast on Monday night when I realized that a special chapter of my life was ending.

My college experience has been an interesting one. As an RA and a photographer I have conflicting lives where my one job is to tell students to not drink and then my other job is to take pictures of them being drunk.

I do not condone underage drinking, or actually drinking at all. I like to think that my presence at many of these college events is an extension of my RA presence in the lives of students I care about. At the end of the day what matters is student safety and success.

Part of that success in my mind is achieved through having a good time and enjoying your college experience. I feel really blessed to have been able to be at so many events where people were having so much fun. I’ve gotten to see some really special times in people’s lives through doing photo booths at college events.

Monday, I realized, was my final photo booth.

So what does this all amount to? What does it all mean? I’ve got all these fun times stored on my computer and all these memories that make me smile, but for some reason facing the end still puts an insurmountable weight on my heart.

Leaving college behind is bittersweet. You’ve achieved what you came to do. But saying goodbye to your closest friends, some of them perhaps forever, was never something academic counseling said you’d have to do.

So to alliveate the pain, I want to share.

I want to share memories from the last three years. (I didn’t do photo booths my freshman year.) I want to put up photos that you forgot existed from years ago.

Why is this important? Why do I bother posting photos that were taken anything more than a week ago? Because my job is to remind you why you came to college in the first place.

Sure, you came to learn and get an education, but what good is learning if it doesn’t improve your quality of life? I think you came to college to truly live life, to learn who you are, to meet amazing people, to have fun, to feel lke you’ve done something with your life.

Not all of that is physically happening in the photos below, but sometimes it is, and I believe that they’re the best symbol there is of you getting the most out of your college experience.

These photos show people having fun, being creative, and spending time with people they care about.

That is what college is to me, and although college is over, I don’t thinking spending time with people you care about has to end.

There’s a ton of photos here, like over 400. Ther are some really fun patterns here and some crazy stuff going on. There are couples that went to every event with just each other for three years. Batman, Darth Vader, and our Dean of Students Jerry Price all made appearances. There was a snake, a controtionist, and inflatable aliens. I purposly waited until finals were done to post these, just in case I gave someone an extra reason to procrastinate.

Happy scrolling!

King Felix and “An American Venice” Fuse Art Forms

Since the creation of film, the collaboration between music and movies has been inevitable—who could resist the beauteous powers of such expressiveness? Friday, May 3, the two art forms will join forces at the premiere of Kelle Leonard’s indie comedy, An American In Venice, with the contribution of Southern California’s rising EDM artists, King Felix.

If you’re wondering who King Felix is or what An American In Venice is, don’t feel out of the loop—neither have emerged into the mainstream world, but it won’t be surprising if they do.  King Felix has used the power of their music to further the message and exposure of director Kelle Leonard’s senior thesis film with the significant addition of four original tracks—and all at the price of: nothing!

“We believe no one achieves success alone,” King Felix said in an exclusive interview with Peace.Love.EDM. “By working with other artists we can expand our knowledge and skill sets to a greater level.”

In 2011, Keng Felix was birthed in Los Angeles when Shaun Ausmus (a former member of King Felix) and Jason Laszlo Toth started producing together. Not long after, while Jason was in a biological psychology class at California State Northridge, he met Dennis Madrigal, who became the third member of King Felix.

With Dennis’s clear passion for the arts, I wasn’t surprised to hear he met Kelle Leonard (who not only directed, but also co-wrote An American In Venice) in a high school film class.  When Kelle asked his longtime friend if he could use King Felix tracks for film, the group generously contributed, and even said they’re grateful and excited for their music to make its debut in film.

King Felix contributed four tracks to the movie’s soundtrack: “Medicinal Hookers,” “Hash Baller,” “Digital Love Session,” and “Feel Your Organs.”

“The first three songs mentioned are from our project King Felix.  The fourth song (Feel Your Organs) is a product of two of our side projects, Dynamite Jacksin and Super Awesome Ultra Cool,” the group said. “We tried to select tracks that fit well with the pace and feel of the scenes. Since we were asked to provide music for the [the movie’s] party scene, we felt our up-tempo EDM music fit best.”

Initially producing mainly electro house, King Felix has continued to evolve with no fear. The group has branched into limitless genres of electronic music, with tracks falling under the realms of Tech-House, Minimal, Glitch, Experimental, Electronica, and even Instrumental Hip Hop. The unmatchable beats of King Felix are creatively and intricately structured through the talent of their craftsmanship.

“We create most of our music by first jamming it out on synthesizers, pianos, guitars, bass, vocoders, vocals, and various DJ equipment,” King Felix said.

For live shows, the group even has special additions to their work with Christine Joy, vocalist, and a guitarist, Raymond Milco.

If you’re in the Southern California area, be sure to check out the premiere of An American In Venice, and join King Felix as some of the first audiences to see the film. Afterward, you can party the night away with King Felix at their concert in Antelope Valley—trust me, you won’t want to miss it!

More about An American In Venice:

“Failure and uncertainty surrounds the young, witty Henry Mayer as he struggles to make it as an actor living in Venice Beach, California. In pursuit of the American dream, Henry is lost in daze of confusion with no clear path for his future.  In what Henry believes are the worst four days of his life, he realizes his experience might just leave him hopeful for his future.”

It has been a great year filled with adventures for many Chapman students.  University Program Board initiated Explore SoCal this year to help students get off campus and visit unique places in Southern California. We’ve done 27 weekend and weekday trips and covered over 3,000 miles of road. Yet, there’s still so many places left to be explored. Here are the 20 most memorable images taken from some of the trips we’ve done.

Visit Chapman University Program Board’s Facebook or follow us on Instagram @chapmanupb to see more images. If you are interested in joining our excursions next year, email us at chapmanupb@gmail.com to be added to our Explore SoCal Mailing List.

Wednesday of finals week is the night traditionally selected by students for Undie Run.  While this is not a sanctioned University event, I traditionally take this opportunity to offer some information and advice:

  • If you intend to participate, we ask that you please be safe and be respectful to the people and property around you, both on and off campus.  Items such as torches and open containers of alcohol will be confiscated by Orange Police or Public Safety.
  • We recommend that you avoid leaving personal items of value unattended.  Each semester we receive reports of students leaving cell phones, keys, or other items behind during the Run, only to find them gone when they return.
  • We also recommend that you wear shoes; last Undie Run we had several foot injuries (broken toes, lacerations, etc.) suffered by barefoot students.
  • There have been several recent reports of Chapman women being approached and accosted by unknown non-Chapman men. Unfortunately, the Undie Run can be a prime attraction for such men, so I encourage all women to stay together and avoid men you don’t know.
  • The Bert Williams Lawn in front of Memorial Hall will be set up for Commencement ceremonies, so we suggest students gather in the Attallah Piazza again and then run to Glassell through the Schmid Gate by the campus’s main entrance.
  • The Leatherby Libraries entrances will be locked during Undie Run except for the east doors facing Argyros Forum; these doors will be staffed by Public Safety and Undie Run participants will not be permitted to enter.
  • Undie Run participants needing restroom facilities are encouraged to use the ones in Argyros Forum, which will be open 24 hours during finals week, or the restrooms in Hashinger which will be open during the Run as well.

I also want to caution you strongly against hosting off-campus parties on Undie Run night.  Most of you are well aware that Orange Police are becoming more vigilant about responding to reports of disruptive house parties; in fact, this year several students have been cited with criminal violations carrying hefty fines for parties deemed to be excessive.  I see no reason not to expect the same kind of response on Undie Run night. OPD also will request the assistance of Chapman Public Safety at disturbances involving Chapman students, and the students involved will be referred to the Dean of Students Office for disciplinary consideration.  Given that it is finals week, and given that all students have been cautioned in advance against inappropriate behavior, the Dean of Students Office will consider stronger sanctions for violations occurring on Undie Run night.  This caution applies not just to parties but also to vandalism and other criminal activity.  For that matter, knowing that classes conclude on Friday, I expect that OPD may be patrolling extra closely this weekend as well; I encourage you to keep this caution in mind if you are planning any parties prior to finals week.

Thanks for your consideration of these items.  As always, if you choose to participate in the Undie Run please stay safe and sober and encourage your friends to do the same — jmp

Have you heard the word?! I Am THAT Girl is a new club on campus that seems to be attracting all kinds of people, males and females, across all majors and minors, and all class years, to attend its meetings. So what is it?

I am THAT Girl is a national non-profit organization that has fifteen chapters around the US. Started not too long ago by Alexis Jones and Emily Greener, the organization began with a single chapter consisting of just a few women and has now grown immensely to include women at schools across the country. Camellia Khalvati started Chapman’s I Am THAT Girl chapter just last semester (Fall 2012) after attending Alexis’s interview with Hilary Duff. Inspired by Alexis’s poise and confidence, Khalvati explains that after she saw the interview she went home and immediately searched “who was that girl?!” She read about Alexis’s career and her involvement with I Am That Girl. Camellia was beyond excited; it was an organization she had only dreamed of. As it turns out, they were accepting applications for interns, so Camellia applied and amazingly, she got the job! Chapman’s chapter has developed a tightly knit group of students, some who come when they can and others who show up each week. Each week, members are encouraged to bring a new friend, so that the experience can be shared and extended to a wider community.

It works like this; members come to meetings once a week, sit in a circle, and have meaningful dialogue about something going on in the world, a stereotype normally left un-questioned or something else thought-provoking. At the start of each meeting, members take turns going around the circle and say why this week they were THAT girl (or guy). THAT girl, or guy, is the best version of yourself; she/he stands up for others, she/he thinks deeply about perspectives outside her own, she/he thinks highly of herself and does good in the world.

The concept goes that if you love yourself you can love others, but it’s important to start with a good foundation of self-esteem and depth.

The club is not affiliated with anything Greek but definitely has similar strong elements of familyhood. In fact, bonding events outside of meetings are called familyhood events. On a personal level, I am a big fan of the community I Am THAT Girl has established at Chapman; I feel that the members are bound by common values and a shared interest to interact and participate in meaningful dialogue with one another, despite busy lives and the varying emotional taxes we all are filing. I appreciate that I Am THAT Girl doesn’t just cater to one type of person; people from varying backgrounds who are experiencing different journeys unite by sharing their unique experiences and often find that other people are fighting similar battles. The club unites people merely by providing a safe environment to open up, and discuss deep issues.

If you’re not already captivated by the positive name, the confident, inspiring people who walk around campus with the shirt, or this article, go to a meeting and see for yourself how moving an I Am THAT Girl meeting really is.

Meetings are from 8-9pm in the Davis Community Center on Tuesday nights, starting up again next semester.

Jon Shenk’s The Island President is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced—the literal survival of his country and everyone in it. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after thirty years of despotic rule, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable.
