Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Italian Studies Program present, Italian Comics: History, Authors, and Characters – a lecture by author Dr. Antonia Iannotta – on Thursday, March 5, 2015 in Argyros Forum, Room 209C at 7 p.m.

ABOUT THE EVENT: In 2008 Italian comics began its second century of existence. On December 27, 1908, the first issue of Corriere dei Piccoli magazine was published. In this lecture Dr. Iannotta will trace the social and cultural development of Italian comics, underlining their history, main authors, and some of most popular characters. Year after year, character after character, Italian comic books stories depicted the changes in Italian society, confirming their cultural importance and artistic legitimacy.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Antonio Iannotta received his Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Salerno (Italy). He has published essays on cinema, TV series, comics, theory of media, and a monograph about Samuel Beckett. He is now working on a book about sound and image in film experience. He worked for six years in Naples as the communications director for an International Comics Festival and is currently the artistic director of the San Diego Italian Film Festival.
