These streaming videos do last about an hour, but they are WORTH IT. If I share a video from this series, it&#8217;s because I have watched it, found it useful, and think it is applicable for those in higher education. Under the video I provide some of the highlights, but they do not replace the details and context from the video.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Using Canvas to Connect with Students\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5sQMWU0oZnI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>It can be challenging to maintain connection with students when they aren&#8217;t face-to-face. You can use the tools in Canvas to connect with your students. The ideas talked about in this video:<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"40fqk\" data-offset-key=\"cnabq-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"cnabq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cnabq-0-0\">1.\u00a0 Add a welcome module;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"40fqk\" data-offset-key=\"6dl2d-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6dl2d-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6dl2d-0-0\">2. Provide a confidential student survey the first week; <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"40fqk\" data-offset-key=\"7n23q-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"7n23q-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7n23q-0-0\">3. Share and organize resources for each week\/module; <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"40fqk\" data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\">4. A<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\">llow a feedback exchange each week for a point or two and ask for feedback: <\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\">How helpful are resources? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\">How helpful are assignments? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\">What do you need to be successful? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\">Great way to encourage students to reach out! <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fetmq-0-0\">Students really react positively to this weekly opportunity in the end of term course evaluations; <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"40fqk\" data-offset-key=\"6rrht-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6rrht-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6rrht-0-0\">5. Use the notes column in the gradebook; <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"40fqk\" data-offset-key=\"bf36l-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"bf36l-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"bf36l-0-0\">6. Chunk info for your students; <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"40fqk\" data-offset-key=\"682ef-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"682ef-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"682ef-0-0\">7.\u00a0 Use the &#8220;Message students who&#8221; function in the gradebook; <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"40fqk\" data-offset-key=\"baq3m-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"baq3m-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"baq3m-0-0\">8. Use analytics to see who is engaging with your course and who isn&#8217;t<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"baq3m-0-0\">9. Use audio or audio\/video comments in the gradebook;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"baq3m-0-0\"><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div data-offset-key=\"baq3m-0-0\">Anywhere you can add your sense of presence to a course. Anywhere you can add comments, feedback, reminders. . . students appreciate it.
