Mysteries of Canvas: Grade Posting Policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By default, Canvas courses have an <strong>Automatic<\/strong> grade posting policy.\u00a0 This means that grades, comments, and annotations are visible to students as soon as grades are entered in the Gradebook or submitted in SpeedGrader.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not want students to receive notifications for grades and comments while you are grading, you can change the grade posting policy to <strong>Manual<\/strong>.\u00a0 You can do this for individual assignments\/quizzes\/discussions or for your entire Gradebook.<\/p>\n<h3>Changing the Grade Posting Policy for an Individual Assignment\/Quiz\/Discussion<\/h3>\n<p>To change the grade posting policy for an individual assignment\/quiz\/discussion, hover over the column for the assignment\/quiz\/discussion in the Gradebook.\u00a0 Click on the three dots in the top right of the column, then select <strong>Grade Posting Policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a the Grade Posting Policy for the Entire Gradebook<\/h3>\n<p>To change the grade posting policy for your entire Gradebook, click on the Settings icon in the top right of the Gradebook.<\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Select the <strong>Grade Posting Policy<\/strong> tab, then select <strong>Manually Post Grades<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a Grades<\/h3>\n<p>When an assignment\/quiz\/discussion has a manual posting policy, students will not be able to see grades and feedback or review their quiz attempt until you post the grades.<\/p>\n<p>To post the grades, hover over the column for the assignment\/quiz\/discussion in the Gradebook.\u00a0 Click on the three dots in the top right of the column, then select <b>Post grades<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/10\/PostGrades.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6483\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What is the Difference Between Grade Posting Policy and Hide Grades?<\/h3>\n<p>You may have noticed that there is an option to <strong>Hide grades\u00a0<\/strong>when you click on the three dots in the top right of a Gradebook column.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/10\/HideGrades.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6486\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6486 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2023\/10\/HideGrades.png\" alt=\"Hide grades\" width=\"499\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/academics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2023\/10\/HideGrades.png 499w, as a manual grade posting policy and <strong>only hides previously entered grades and comments<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Students will still receive notifications for newly-entered grades and comments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The Hide Grades feature only affects previously posted grades for an assignment. Best practice suggests that instructors should use this feature sparingly (i.e. to hide grades posted in error). To hide all grades upon entry until you are ready to post them for student view, please\u00a0set a manual posting policy for your assignment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a
