{"id":7653,"date":"2025-05-14T09:57:52","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T16:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/academics\/2025\/05\/14\/stepping-into-the-world-of-educational-technology\/"},"modified":"2025-05-14T09:57:52","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T16:57:52","slug":"stepping-into-the-world-of-educational-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/academics\/2025\/05\/14\/stepping-into-the-world-of-educational-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Stepping into the World of Educational Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This blog post is authored by Briana Craig, Student Technology Assistant, Educational Technology Services<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Stepping into the World of Educational Technology<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From STEM Research to Educational Technology<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Prior to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> beginning my role as a student technology assistant, I had taken a mild interest in education while <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I was<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> working with various undergraduate research labs that focused on STEM education.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I worked with a biology education lab at Chapman that focused on <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ways to improve active learning in the classroom<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and engagement during office hours.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> I also did a summer internship with a STEM education research team at Washington State University that focused on the benefits of incorporating art into elementary school-level health science <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">curriculum<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I was drawn to this job because it <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">seemed like<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a good way <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to combine my interest in education with my technical skills from studying computer science.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Connecting with the Team<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The educational technology team fosters an incredibly positive and collaborative work environment. The team has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a genuine dedication to assisting others and a remarkable ability to connect with the faculty and staff they serve. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was able to learn<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by example and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">grow<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> my ability to provide solutions <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in a positive and reassuring manner<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Learning and Applying Technical and Soft Skills<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Training in Educational Technology Tools<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a student, I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">obviously<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> had some exposure to tools like Zoom or PollEverywhere, but through this role, I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was able to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> learn about these tools on a deeper level. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While learning how to use these tools myself, I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was able to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">learn<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> about the many features they contain and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">all the ways that<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">tools like NearPod or Padlet can be used<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for engaging interactive learning.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reporting and Data Analysis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Throughout my time in this job, I produced many reports using Excel. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As someone <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who is<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> highly organized and often makes spreadsheets for everything in my personal life, I found it<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0a valuable experience <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to efficiently analyze data for the educational technology team<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">really<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> helped me put my critical thinking skills to the test because I had to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">make sure<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> my reports were accurate, organized, and easily maintainable for future student workers.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hosting the Virtual Tech Hub<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One of my <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">main<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> responsibilities in this role was hosting the Virtual Tech Hub, our drop-in hours for faculty to ask questions and get assistance with their technical problems. This part of the job helped me significantly refine my soft skills because I got to practice explaining technical issues to a non-technical audience and help answer their questions or problems. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was able to learn<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> from watching our Instructional Analysts, getting a chance to hear the answers to questions I would not have been able to answer, and listening to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the way<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> they masterfully walk the instructors through complex technical issues.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> I gained the ability to efficiently write help tickets, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">making sure<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">properly<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> summarized the problem and provided follow-up solutions and concise steps for resolution in situations where the problem could happen again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Piloting New Technologies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One of my favorite parts of this job was being able to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">pilot test<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> any updates to our existing tools or try out our new tools. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> includes Chapman\u2019s AI chatbot <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">called \u201cPantherBot,\u201d which <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> launched<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in early 2024.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Since its launch, I have been serving as a live agent, answering questions related to Canvas and other educational technology tools. However, I also got many questions <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">unrelated to our department, so I had to use quick thinking and creative solutions to provide responses that either answered their questions or guided them to someone who could.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Advice for Future Student Technology Assistants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Based on my time in this role, here are a few pieces of advice for any future student workers. Do not be afraid to take initiative<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, if<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> there is a skill you want to practice or learn that could be related to this role, ask if there are any opportunities to grow. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The team here is super supportive<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they only want<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> you to succeed.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> You are more capable than you might think. There were occasions when I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was tasked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with helping an instructor with a problem, and I was unsure if I was familiar enough with the process or tools, but in the end, I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was able to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> help them find a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">positive<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> resolution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Future Outlook<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This role taught me so much about the world of higher educational technology and all that it has to offer. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">am finishing up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> my MS in Computer Science, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I would say that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> this job has paired well with my education and prepared me for the industry in ways my classes could not.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> I plan to stay in the educational technology field.
