\n, an Orange publishing house founded by
\nKevin Staniec ’01<\/strong>
\n, is “Building community, one story at a time.” But during June and July,\u00a0the organization\u00a0will build story\u00a0one author at a time during its third annual
\nSummer Writing Project<\/a>
\nby hosting panels, workshops and a writing contest that will give authors a\u00a0chance to be published.

1888 has joined forces once\u00a0again with JukePop, Chapman University, Barnes & Noble and
\nOrange Public Library & History Center<\/a>
\nto host
\nthree free public\u00a0events<\/a>
\non writing, marketing and publishing for authors as part of Summer Writing Project.\u00a0Each event\u00a0will be recorded and\u00a0published\u00a0as a special episode of
\nThe How The Why<\/a>,<\/em>
\n1888’s weekly\u00a0educational\u00a0podcast\u00a0series hosted by
\nJon-Barrett Ingels<\/a> (Class of ’00)<\/strong>
\n, whose book,
\nHow to Succeed by Failing<\/em><\/a>
\n, was published by 1888 (1888 has published
\n36 novellas<\/a>
\n,
\nthree dime novels<\/a>
\nand
\nthree “The Cost of Paper”<\/a>
\nbooks to date).<\/p>\n

The program also gives authors the chance to
\nsubmit novellas one chapter at a time<\/a>
\nand read excerpts aloud in a workshop setting for feedback. The
\nsubmission period<\/a>
\nis June 1-30; a workshop series will be held held July 1-31 for the top 25 authors selected; and the winning author, who 1888 will publish, will be announced Aug. 1.<\/p>\n

“The main goal for developing the Summer Writing Project was to establish a program that would enhance Summer Reading activities while also encouraging individuals to write,” said Staniec. “Essentially, we want accessibility for individuals of all ages to read, write and engage with an international community of storytellers. What we didn’t anticipate was the overwhelming support this program would provide to encourage participants to share throughout the process.”<\/p>\n

Staniec, an author himself, knows how challenging writing can be, and wanted to provide support to fuel the creative flame for aspiring and published authors alike.<\/p>\n

“Writing is difficult. We want participants to feel\u00a0comfortable with the process of turning that idea into a concept. And on the other hand, we want readers to find unique circles of like-minded readers, where they can expand their libraries beyond the mass-marketed books,” said Staniec. “We hope this creative community, who is searching for the next great storyteller, will find new authors and support\u00a0these authors as our next Hemingway, Oates or Steinbeck.”<\/p>\n

Also during\u00a0the month of July,\u00a0a\u00a0series of free educational essays, lectures and podcast episodes will be produced for the community and to support the\u00a0top 25 authors with advancing their stories.<\/p>\n

Jeff Garvin ’98<\/strong><\/a>
\nis one of the event panelists of
\n“Publishing: Launching Your Career,”<\/a>
\nwhich will be held July 23 at a local Barnes & Noble. Jeff’s first novel,
\nSymptoms of Being Human<\/em><\/a>
\n, is a young adult book portraying the life of\u00a0a modern gender-fluid teenager and was recently published by Balzer + Bray.<\/p>\n
