{"id":6692,"date":"2019-10-08T16:35:15","date_gmt":"2019-10-08T23:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/alumni\/2019\/10\/08\/an-international-homecoming\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T22:12:02","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T22:12:02","slug":"an-international-homecoming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/alumni\/2019\/10\/08\/an-international-homecoming\/","title":{"rendered":"An International Homecoming"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Lajos Petro (MFA \u201901) traveled over 6,000 miles from Budapest to attend Chapman Family Homecoming, his first visit to campus in 16 years.<\/h3>\n<p>Saturday evening, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/events\/homecoming-weekend\/index.aspx\">Chapman Family Homecoming<\/a> was winding down, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/about\/our-family\/leadership\/president\/index.aspx\"><strong>President Daniele Struppa <\/strong><\/a>approached a table at the Alumni Panther Pub Party in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/about\/our-home\/keck-center.aspx\">Keck Center<\/a> and said, \u201cI heard there\u2019s someone here who traveled the furthest for Homecoming.\u201d With that, <strong>Lajos Petro MFA \u201901<\/strong> introduced himself and said, \u201cI guess it\u2019s me\u2026I came from Hungary.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6695\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6695\" style=\"width: 314px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6695\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2019\/10\/struppa-and-lajos-580x387.jpg\" alt=\"President Daniele Struppa and Lajos Petro MFA \u201901 \" width=\"314\" height=\"210\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Daniele Struppa and Lajos Petro MFA \u201901<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Struppa\u2019s reaction was similar to everyone else\u2019s who met Petro, \u201cReally?! That\u2019s fantastic!\u201d A fun conversation full of battling heavy accents and a round of happy photos with the president and other alumni ensued. Petro sat back down and said, \u201cTHAT was fantastic!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Lajos Petro came to the United States in the late &#8217;90s in search of his Masters of Fine Arts and only knew of one school offering the degree he wanted \u2013 U.S.C. While at a Hungarian restaurant in Los Angeles, the owner advised Petro to talk to his friend,<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/2019\/01\/18\/dean-bob-bassett-and-media-arts-chair-professor-janell-shearer-to-retire-this-summer\/\"><strong> Bob Bassett<\/strong><\/a>, and it wasn\u2019t long before Petro made the decision to attend Chapman University.<\/p>\n<p>Through his studies in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/dodge\/programs\/graduate\/mfa-film-tv-producing.aspx\">TV and Film Production<\/a>, Petro made a great group of friends with whom he still stays in contact. Many of them worked on the TV show, \u201cDialogue with Jim Doti\u201d which aired on KOCE, Orange County\u2019s PBS station. He has the best memories from that experience, especially his time spent with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.chapman.edu\/2011\/12\/14\/professor-jay-boylan-honored-at-retirement-reception\/\"><strong>Professor Jay Boylan<\/strong><\/a> and friends <strong>Pamela Ezell \u201981 (MFA \u201987, Ph.D \u201918)<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.chapman.edu\/2015\/05\/19\/alumni-casey-kasprzyk-01-wins-in-new-emmy-category\/\"><strong>Casey Kasprzyk \u201901<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Laurie McLaughlin \u201988<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Keeping in Touch with Chapman Through the Years<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6697\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6697\" style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6697\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2019\/10\/lajos-laurie-joy-andie-580x773.jpg\" alt=\" lajos-laurie-joy-andie.jpg\" width=\"242\" height=\"323\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joy Flynn, Lajos Petro MFA \u201901, Laurie McLaughlin \u201988, and Andi Doddridge at Chapman&#8217;s Homecoming 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Petro returned to Budapest in 2003 and has not been back to Chapman since, but he feels very connected to his alma mater through the school\u2019s website, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/alumni\/connect\/index.aspx\">Alumni Newsletter<\/a>, and even Google Earth. He is the only Chapman alum from or living in Hungary, so he feels quite remote from the school that holds such a special place in his heart and looks forward to the monthly emails.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey let me know what\u2019s going on. I get homesick for Chapman at times \u2013 it usually goes away after about 15 minutes, but I like that I can stay in touch through the internet even when I\u2019m so far away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andi Doddridge<\/strong>, Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/alumni\/index.aspx\">Alumni Engagement<\/a>, was thrilled to hear that Petro was staying connected from a distance. \u201cOur alumni have such wonderful stories to tell, as does the university, and we strive to share those in our newsletter. That we can make a connection with Lajos \u2013 and other alumni across the country and abroad \u2013 is vital. We want all alumni to continue their lifelong connection to Chapman and want to come home, whether it\u2019s for Homecoming, other Chapman events, or just to say hi. How exciting that Lajos came all the way from Budapest \u2013 that has to be a record!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Coming Home to Chapman University<\/h3>\n<p>McLaughlin took Petro on a 4-hour walking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/admission\/undergraduate\/visit\/index.aspx\">tour of campus<\/a> before all of the Homecoming activities began. His first impression at almost every stop was a \u201chead explosion\u201d moment \u2013 making him semi-speechless. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/about\/maps-directions\/campus-map\/?id=1074#!m\/245030\">DeMille Hall<\/a>, where the majority of his classes were held, is under construction, so he couldn\u2019t re-trace those steps; but when he went into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/about\/maps-directions\/campus-map\/?id=1074#!m\/245026\">Beckman Hall<\/a>, which opened while he was a student, he was speechless.<\/p>\n<p>Ever the film student, he said, \u201cIt was just like the ending of \u201cThe Planet of the Apes\u201d when they show the Statue of Liberty. Everything was the same \u2013 it even had the same smell! It was like \u2018I know this place.\u2019 What an amazing feeling!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After stopping at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/about\/maps-directions\/campus-map\/?id=1074#!m\/245453\">&#8220;Sunken Lawn&#8221; (now the Bert C. Williams Mall)<\/a> and taking in the quad, they ventured to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/about\/maps-directions\/campus-map\/?id=1074#!m\/245040\">Dodge College&#8217;s Knott Studios<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/about\/maps-directions\/campus-map\/?id=1074#!m\/245031\">DMAC<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/arts\/hilbert-museum.aspx\">Hilbert Museum<\/a>. Staying equally impressed with every building and its contents (he loved the movie posters donated by the DeMille family), Petro commented on the students that he saw and interacted with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were so focused when working, but they were also smart, nice and helpful. Honestly, I don\u2019t think that kids are like that in the real world!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Petro has taken all that he learned at Chapman and puts it to use daily. He produces live game shows that are shown in 26 countries, as well as live teleshopping programming (like QVC) in eight countries. \u201cWithout Chapman, I couldn\u2019t be the producer that I am now. It was a total turning point in my life. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/james-doti\"><strong>Dr. Doti<\/strong><\/a> was always pushing for us to be Global Citizens and I kind of feel like I\u2019m doing that in Hungary, working with so many countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Hoping for a Chapman Family Tradition<\/h3>\n<p>Wrapping up their tour, McLaughlin and Petro took in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/library\/index.aspx\">Leatherby Libraries<\/a> and met with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/library\/about\/meet-the-dean.aspx\"><strong>Dean Charlene Baldwin<\/strong><\/a>. Once again, his mind was blown with the impressiveness of the building and all that was held inside. At the Book Store, he bought a \u201cTON of stuff\u201d to take home to his wife, 3-year old twins and the rest of his family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very strange to buy stuff from my university for my kids \u2013 it really made me very emotional. You know, I would tell my Chapman friends all the time that I would like to come back, but it was never the right time, so I think they didn\u2019t believe it when I came.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I want to come back with my family; I want to see Jim Doti next time and more friends. And really, although it won\u2019t be for a while, I want my kids to go to school here.
