How does this happen? A unique workshop format!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11595 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/84\/2018\/07\/D1EB835C-DA4E-496F-99FA-6E3A24ADE9BA.jpg\" alt=\"Workshop Participants outside\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students enjoy the unique structure of first participating in experiments as naive subjects to earn cash. The experiments were followed by a presentation and discussion about the experiment and results. Unlike a typical lecture, students are encouraged to discuss and ask questions. Topics covered included game theory, markets, auctions, supply and demand, and prisoner\u2019s dilemma. One student described the experimental approach as &#8220;really cool&#8221; and &#8220;definitely different from just sitting and listening to a lecture for hours like a classroom setting&#8230; a lot more immersive so I could understand the material better.\u201d Another student described, \u201cI thought the experimental approach to economics was amazing. I loved being able to connect what we were learning to real life situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11591\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11591\" style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11591\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/84\/2018\/07\/C539F90C-D502-4915-BA9D-BCBAAE302E55-1.jpg\" alt=\"Students sitting on floor working on a group assignment\" width=\"427\" height=\"362\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students work with their peers to think critically and solve specific economic questions and problems.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11594 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/84\/2018\/07\/2018-06-29_13-20-13_248-Copy.jpeg\" alt=\"Two students participating an an experiment\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The annual\u00a0Vernon L. Smith High School Workshop in Experimental Economics is hosted at the <a href=\"http:\/\/http\/www.chapman.edu\/research-and-institutions\/economic-science-institute\/\">Economic Science Institute<\/a>\u00a0at Chapman University and sponsored by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifreeweb.org\/\">International Foundation for Research in Experimental Economics (IFREE)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Thomas W. Smith Foundation. The workshop is taught by Dr. Andrew Smyth, Assistant\u00a0Professor of Economics at Marquette University. \u201cWe had a great group of talented, attentive students at this year\u2019s workshop.\u00a0 Listening to students passionately discuss economics right after participating in an experiment is always a treat.\u00a0 Experiments make the economics \u2018come alive\u2019!\u201d Smyth says.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop students arrived with little to no exposure to economics and left with an eager interest to study economics in the future.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11600 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/84\/2018\/07\/249A258B-B0BE-4D8C-90F3-CD9B1186084A-2.jpg\" alt=\"Students outside interacting with each other\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" \/>Here is what some workshop participants had to say about the workshop:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was very interesting to see how many people with little experience in economics were able to prove ideas that appeared to be complicated and hard to demonstrate\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis workshop was absolutely phenomenal, based on the activities given and the teachings. The teacher was great at describing learning concepts and improved the learning experience by teaching us in non-traditional methods.
