Michael Schidlovsky \u201920 (MSRE \u201921) is a student in the inaugural Master of Science in Real Estate program at Chapman University. He sat down to share his Chapman University experiences, his advice, and the importance of showing up for yourself and your career.<\/p>\n

LIFE AT CHAPMAN<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Why did you choose Chapman University?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I chose Chapman for a number of reasons. The quality of faculty, the professional network, and the rigorous academic nature of the program were the biggest deciding factors. I did extensive research and felt that no other university compared in those areas. The opportunity to be a part of the inaugural Master of Science in Real Estate<\/a> program was exciting. The undergraduate faculty and professors were incredibly supportive of this next step in my career, so I took the leap.<\/p>\n

How has your experience been throughout your time at Chapman University?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My experience at Chapman University has exceeded my expectations. This has been a difficult time for everyone with a global pandemic. I wondered if the program would be as good as I had hoped or if it would feel different than I expected. But Chapman University provided my ideal experience. The transition to online classes was seamless. Back on campus, experiences were even richer in person, and I was able to interact with faculty and my cohort in a meaningful way. I believe it\u2019s the people that make Chapman and the program special.<\/p>\n

What advice do you have for students looking to maximize their success while at Chapman University? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Interact with the faculty and professors. I strongly recommend that students get involved as much as they can during their time at Chapman University. There are many ways to do this. Have meetings with professors or staff outside of class. Learn about them, their expertise, and their hobbies. They are great people with tremendous knowledge and reach. Approach them when you need them.<\/p>\n

What has been your favorite part of your experience at the Argyros school?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our Master of Science in Real Estate programming. The classes are fun and interesting\u2014I enjoy going to class. Chapman\u2019s MSRE program, and Chapman as a whole, makes you want to absorb the content. The guest speakers in class and lecturers are incredibly knowledgeable. Take advantage of it\u2014sit and listen deeply.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve been so involved at Chapman. In what ways do you feel like that has helped?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That is most of it. Showing up. If you don\u2019t show up, you can\u2019t perform. I was told at one point, \u201cNinety percent of success is showing up. The other ten percent is being there.\u201d I think showing up is the most important. Being there, with other people, is where you\u2019ll absorb the most knowledge and experience.<\/p>\n

IN THE MASTER OF SCIENCE IN REAL ESTATE PROGRAM<\/b><\/h3>\n

You\u2019re currently in the inaugural MSRE program. What inspired you to get your master\u2019s degree? <\/strong><\/p>\n

My family inspired me. Also, several mentors at Chapman University inspired me. The MSRE program allowed me to have a competitive edge in the ever-growing job search landscape. You need that extra notch in your belt to shine. With Chapman\u2019s MSRE program, that alone makes you stand out among other applicants.<\/p>\n

Has your master\u2019s degree changed your career path or goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My master\u2019s degree has given me more confidence to pursue endless opportunities. I accepted a role at Colliers during the program. The degree provides the leading edge to excel. I was prepared\u2014from having polished resume and cover letter, and I was equipped with real-world experience. My experience and education allowed me to show people that I am committed to real estate as an industry and dedicated to my career path.<\/p>\n

How has your master\u2019s degree helped you grow?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

My Master of Science in Real Estate degree allowed me to prove to myself what I am capable of. What I can accomplish. That I can take a time (like a global pandemic) and still persevere. I am proud that I always work to do better no matter that situation. I surprised myself.<\/p>\n

What has been your favorite thing about the MSRE program so far? <\/strong><\/p>\n

My favorite thing is the depth and width of content that was presented to us. We analyzed and immersed ourselves in all facets of real estate\u2014from analytics to development to capital\u2014and everything in between.<\/p>\n

AFTER THE MASTER OF SCIENCE IN REAL ESTATE PROGRAM<\/b><\/h3>\n

When you\u2019re not working or going to school, what do you like to do for fun? <\/strong><\/p>\n

First and foremost, I love to spend time with my wife (and Dodge College of Film and Arts student) Nadine Kostina<\/a>, and my dog, Hugo. We love to go on road trips or to the beach. Actually, my wife and I met each other at Chapman University at an event and hit it off. I also really love to play competitive ice hockey and golf.<\/p>\n

What career advice do you have for other students, or anyone, looking for an internship or a job? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Do not be afraid to reach out to people! Reach out to the people that are connected to where you want to be, whether it\u2019s a company or a job. That is how I ended up in my position. I talked to someone who grew up next to my grandparents. I hadn\u2019t spoken to him in fifteen years, until I found him on LinkedIn. Reach out to others and don\u2019t be shy. Know that others are expecting you to contact them, and they want to help. If you\u2019re not reaching out, they might think you\u2019re not motivated.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next career-wise now that you\u2019re close to finishing your master\u2019s degree in real estate? <\/strong><\/p>\n

My focus now is establishing myself and my career at Colliers. I\u2019m working hard to establish my brand and reputation. I\u2019m continuing to network and follow-through in a professional setting. I\u2019m always happy to help others grow in the Chapman community.<\/p>\n
