For me, LinkedIn has not only been a platform to like and share posts, but it has also been a useful tool. It\u2019s kind of like your professional Facebook, where it isn\u2019t too weird to add acquaintances and still a place to flex on what you\u2019ve been up to. Instead of posting pictures of your vacation or newest beau, you\u2019re sharing your new internship\/job or how you\u2019ve gotten one (academic) degree hotter.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15674\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15674\" style=\"width: 403px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15674\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/a5f12be877e82f5388ff721b61557f18.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"227\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy of Tenor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I\u2019ve seen students dismiss the idea of keeping their LinkedIn updated, much less create one in the first place. However, remember companies often look at candidates\u2019 social media. Don\u2019t be a student that would rather have employers find tweets about how often you fell asleep during class than the post on LinkedIn about your character growth from an internship. Balance is key; use a LinkedIn account to communicate that you are the person that every future company you apply to needs to hire.<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3><b>Here are some reasons to have a LinkedIn account:<\/b><\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"sidequote-right\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><strong>Fast Fact!<\/strong><\/em> LinkedIn lets you network with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/school\/chapman-university\/people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">alumni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, current students, and other industry professionals<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is an extension of your resume (and an online portfolio!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You have the opportunity to learn new skills with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/learning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LinkedIn Learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (and add to your profile)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can receive the latest updates on industries you are interested in<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Get noticed by recruiters for jobs\/internships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You will have access to job and internship opportunities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reconnect with individuals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engage in discussions within groups<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"sidequote-left\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Reminder: <\/strong>It is important to approach LinkedIn similarly to how you approach the rest of your social media: think about the purpose, fill in the steps to complete your profile, and then engage. <\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are just some of the many reasons to create one, and it is easier than you may think. From a generation that has grown up with technology, it surprises me to see many peers get flustered when creating a LinkedIn profile. I have seen such beautiful, aesthetic, creative Instagrams and think the same efforts can be put into working on a professional LinkedIn!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>When making and updating your LinkedIn, keep in mind:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How you want to be perceived<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What message\/theme you want to portray<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The content you intend to share<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How you will interact with others on the platform<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Industry standards and expectations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>To break down completing your <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/chapman.joinhandshake.com\/articles\/12366\"><b>LinkedIn profile<\/b><\/a><b>, here are some steps to follow:<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Create an account using your Chapman or personal (professional) email<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>2. Upload a professional headshot (we will offer professional headshots when we\u2019re back on campus!)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15694\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-19-at-2.48.39-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"203\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Customize the URL for your profile<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Create a cleaner URL without all the fussy numbers and letters so that people can easily find you!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15676\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-14-at-12.24.56-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"679\" height=\"277\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15677\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-14-at-12.25.07-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"156\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Create a headline unique to you\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15695\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-19-at-10.59.54-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"815\" height=\"417\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15696\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-19-at-11.56.24-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"937\" height=\"273\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"sidequote-right\"><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Edit on your phone to use more characters!<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure to create one that sets you apart from other Chapman students. There are thousands of \u201cStudent at Chapman University,\u201d so use your headline to capture people\u2019s attention. <strong>Having keywords in your headline will help the LinkedIn algorithm show your profile to recruiters who are looking for specific words as well!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Write your \u2018About\u2019 section<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15697\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-19-at-11.56.53-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"857\" height=\"249\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \u2018about\u2019 section is the place to communicate who you are, so think about how your \u2018personal brand\u2019 will come through as you\u2019re crafting this part. This section should be no more than 1-2 paragraphs. Feel free to write in the first or third person, and even let your personality shine through it. Just make sure that you\u2019re keeping it professional! In terms of content, some information you may want to include are: <strong><em>who you are, your academic background, the relevant experience you have to the industry you\u2019re interested in, any short or long-term goals, your purpose or passion, and what path you\u2019re looking to pursue.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Fill out the \u2018experience\u2019 section with everything that is on your resume<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15698\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-19-at-12.45.11-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"605\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feel free to add some other details and experiences that may not have fit on your resume. Your LinkedIn is an extension of your resume, so take advantage of it! You can also upload examples of your work like projects, articles, art\/design work, short films, etc., but make sure that you are giving credit where due and add your own watermark\/other elements to prevent others from using it as their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. Complete the education section<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15679\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-19-at-1.02.17-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"181\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LinkedIn will place your education section after your experience section (unlike your resume if you are a current undergraduate). In this section, you can add any research, relevant coursework, projects, thesis, etc. you have done.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. Add your skills<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">List skills that are relevant to the industry you want to be in. Unlike your resume, which only has technical skills, your LinkedIn can list both technical and interpersonal skills! You can rearrange them in a way that your LinkedIn will highlight the ones you prefer to show up first. You may notice that the skills section also says \u2018endorsements.\u2019 Endorsements are how your connections can vouch for your skills. Connect with people, expand your network!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15686 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-19-at-1.30.47-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"277\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> So who should you be connecting with? You should connect with people you know, people you have a mutual connection with, or people who work in the industry you\u2019re (interested) in. You can send a quick message when making new connections to introduce (or re-introduce) yourself. <strong>The more people you connect with, the more access you have to other people.<\/strong> Next to names, you may see \u201c1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Degree, 2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Degree, or 3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Degree.\u201d Check out the diagram above to understand what they mean!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>11. LinkedIn Learning has many skills in various industries for you to get certified in.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>13. Get feedback from a Career Educator, Career Advisor, or Peer Advisor by making an appointment on <a href=\"https:\/\/chapman.joinhandshake.com\/appointments\">Handshake<\/a>!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><b>Other tips to keep in mind:<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"sidequote-right\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><strong>Quick Tip!<\/strong><\/em> Use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/school\/chapman-university\/people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">alumni tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Chapman\u2019s page to network with others. You can get job\/career ideas, conduct informational interviews, and connect with them on the platform!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like when endorsing skills, it is also correct etiquette to give back a recommendation when receiving one<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Include relevant hashtags and mention organizations\/people accordingly to increase views on your posts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add a picture or video to your post to increase interest<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Follow companies you\u2019re applying to (some recruiters check to see if you are!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Include your LinkedIn URL on your resume once it is completed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Update your profile regularly, make sure everything stays current<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All this, and more, are covered in the LinkedIn workshops and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chapman.joinhandshake.com\/appointments\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">appointments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the Office of Career and Professional Development offers! With so many aspects to the platform, I found it helpful to have someone guide me on filling out all the details. It has been worth it creating a LinkedIn profile because of the networking opportunities I have. <strong>LinkedIn has helped me reconnect with individuals and even get an internship offer!\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LinkedIn can be the tool to network you to your next internship or job too!
