Now, it\u2019s time to talk about the myths and facts of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">using<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> LinkedIn!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1.\u00a0 Being active on LinkedIn just means updating my profile and liking posts: MYTH<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_723\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-723\" style=\"width: 498px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-723\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/career\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/03\/engage.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"332\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">via tenor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LinkedIn is a great networking resource right at your fingertips, so use it! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Besides updating your profile and liking random posts, there is so much more you can do. Comment, share, or do both! Better yet, create a post! Now, I know you may have some doubts, and think \u201cI don\u2019t have anything to say\u201d or \u201cWho am I to post about this or that?\u201d Well, speak from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">your<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> experiences because they are\u2026 well, yours. Post about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A great opportunity you had<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A professional event you attended<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Something that inspires or interests you<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What you are doing to promote growth within yourself\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Latest industry trends you\u2019re intrigued by\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let your connections know your vision for your future and what money moves &#x1f911;\u00a0 you\u2019re taking to get there! Y<strong>our connections and recruiters can see your activity so tailor your actions to demonstrate those goals.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Follow topics and #hashtags related to your goals. This way, your interactions, and activities are tailored to what you want recruiters to see! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don&#8217;t forget to f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ollow the companies you apply to!!!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. I should only connect with people I know: MYTH<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nah, fam. A lot of y\u2019all are hesitant to connect with people you don\u2019t know on LinkedIn. However, <strong>don\u2019t forget that LinkedIn is not just about <\/strong><\/span><strong><i>maintaining <\/i>those connections but also about making <i>new <\/i>ones! <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media2.giphy.com\/media\/XdE6xmmh80kUyoyxAO\/giphy.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media2.giphy.com\/media\/XdE6xmmh80kUyoyxAO\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"The Kid Mero Showtime GIF by Desus &amp; Mero\" width=\"480\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">via GIPHY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That being said, you don\u2019t have to connect with anyone and everyone&#8230; <strong>tailor what you do to who you want to become.<\/strong> So besides connecting to friends, professors, and co-workers, consider connecting with people (and specifically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/school\/chapman-university\/people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">alumni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) in the industries you want to learn more about or be involved in. Connect with people who are in the positions you hope to see yourself in one day. Maybe start a conversation and develop that new LinkedIn connection into a networking relationship!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. I should be careful of what media and content I post: FACT<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media3.giphy.com\/media\/kLk1Qa8mrYdQA\/giphy.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media3.giphy.com\/media\/kLk1Qa8mrYdQA\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Finding Nemo Seagulls GIF\" width=\"480\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">via GIPHY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While showing your projects and what you have worked on is highly encouraged, don\u2019t forget to watermark your work or ensure in some way that you&#8217;re claiming ownership so you receive proper credit! Maybe post a sample and not the whole thing. An abstract of a research paper is a great place to start; then, if people are interested in learning more, it can be used as a conversation starter!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. I can\u2019t message people I don\u2019t know on LinkedIn: MYTH<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This. Is. A. Biggo. Myth. To all the seniors and recent alumni who often ask us to connect them to employers&#8230; You CAN initiate the conversation!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media2.giphy.com\/media\/WtOdb75cMcjIK2jmTq\/giphy.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media2.giphy.com\/media\/WtOdb75cMcjIK2jmTq\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Phoebe Buffay Mind Blown GIF by Friends\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">via GIPHY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We believe in you. Trust us, it is better coming from you. Plus, that is what LinkedIn is for \u2013 networking and connecting! Send a customized connection request &#8211; short and sweet, inviting, and interesting. When they accept, follow up with a thank you and strike up a conversation! If you don\u2019t get a response, that\u2019s okay! Miller<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"sidequote-right\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><strong>BONUS<\/strong><\/em>: You can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/groups\/54346\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> find fellow alumni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and search by major, company, location, etc. Best part is you already have something in common with them: Chapman!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">millions <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of people on LinkedIn. If a conversation doesn\u2019t seem to bear fruit with one individual, try another! There are people out there who want to share their experiences; you might just have to transfer the time you spend looking at random Instagram profiles into looking at some LinkedIn ones!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To my fellow undergraduates, plenty of our professors have given us these encouraging words of wisdom: <strong>Use your student card! Not your physical student ID but the fact that you are a curious student who wants to learn more about an industry or career path to supplement what you are learning in your courses.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More Myths vs. Facts from our Career Team!<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><b>6. Everyone is on LinkedIn: MYTH <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Haley Wragg\u2019s Career Tip!)<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As much as we career peeps love using LinkedIn, we know not everyone uses the platform. Here are some other networking platforms that you might find useful:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Education: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edjoin.org\/Account\/Login\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EDJOIN<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Startups: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gust.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gust<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">General Networking: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meetup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and even social media like Twitter and Instagram!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>7. LinkedIn and Facebook are basically the same: MYTH <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aaron Vilaubi\u2019s Career Tip!)<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LinkedIn &amp; Facebook are similar as in LinkedIn is a social media platform, yes, but they are not entirely the same. Stop treating it like it is. People can see your most recent activity and see that you told John Smith at XYZ Company his viewpoint on an article was &#8216;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[insert expletive] dumb\/stupid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#x1f92c;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It&#8217;s a bad look, it will catch up to you, and it will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> make you more popular.
