The <\/span>2020 Op<\/span><\/i>en Doors Report on International Educational Exchange<\/span><\/i><\/a>, released November 16 <\/span>by the Institute of International Education (IIE),<\/span> provides a critical baseline on the state of international educational exchange prior to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/span>The report h<\/span>ighlights <\/span>that d<\/span>uring the 2018\/2019 academic year, 347,099 U.S. students studied abroad for academic credit, a 1.6% increase over the previous year. Documenting ten consecutive years of growth, the 2020 Open Doors report provides a benchmark, indicating strong interest in study abroad programs<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Following trends, g<\/span>lobal education p<\/span>articipation <\/span>and rankings <\/span>for<\/span> Chapman <\/span>students <\/span>also increased<\/span> in 2018\/19<\/span>: <\/span>46<\/span><\/b>.1<\/span><\/b>% of undergraduate Chapman students participate in an international program before graduating, ranking #<\/span><\/b>35<\/span><\/b> compared to other <\/span><\/b>Doctoral <\/span><\/b>Institutions<\/span><\/b> for undergraduate participation<\/span><\/b>. Chapman ranks at #106 for total number of students abroad <\/span><\/b>(<\/span><\/b>with <\/span><\/b>774<\/span><\/b> undergraduate and graduate <\/span><\/b>students<\/span><\/b>) <\/span><\/b>compared to all <\/span><\/b>reporting <\/span><\/b>institutions, up from #127 in the previous year. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

European countries <\/span>(including the United Kingdom)<\/span> remain th<\/span>e most popular destination for U.S. students. Latin America and the Caribbean remains the second most popular region for study abroad, while Asia, the third most popular region, increased by 6%, driven by a 16% increase in study abroad to South Korea and a 5% increase in study abroad to Japan. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Americans who study abroad are increasingly diverse, with 31% percent of U.S. students who studied abroad in 2018\/19 identifying as racial or ethnic minorities. While this is an improvement from the 15% representation 20 years ago, it <\/span><\/span>remains<\/span><\/span> below minority participation in U.S. higher education today (45%).<\/span><\/span> The Center for Global Education created a brochure for <\/span><\/span>Black, <\/span><\/span>Indigenous<\/span><\/span>, and Students of Color <\/span><\/span>Abroad <\/span><\/span>brochure<\/span><\/span><\/a> for considerations when selecting a program, student testimonials, tips for students, and to reflec<\/span><\/span>t <\/span><\/span>on<\/span><\/span> how<\/span><\/span> studying abroad can shape your identity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The number of students with disabilities who are studying abroad also increased in 2018\/19 at 10.5% of all students abroad (+1.3%) with mental disabilities, learning disabilities, and chronic health disorders accounting for 85% of all disabilities represented. The Center for Global Education created a <\/span>Students with Disabilities Abroad brochure<\/span><\/a> for considerations when selecting a program, student testimonials, tips for students, and to reflec<\/span>t <\/span>on how<\/span> s<\/span>tu<\/span>dying abroad can shape your identity.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Center for Global Education offers <\/span>a<\/span>round<\/span> 30<\/span> short-term Travel Courses, <\/span>90 <\/span>semester<\/span> abroad programs, an<\/span>d 7<\/span> summer<\/span> int<\/span>ernational internship opportunities each year. Chapman students can use most of their federal, state, and institutional aid <\/span>on <\/span>90%<\/span> of<\/span> semester abroad programs and earn academic credit to fulfill their Chapman requirements. <\/span>External scholarships<\/a> are available including the Gilman Scholarship. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
