As an educator, parent, aspiring teacher, or community member, are you concerned about standardized testing in American schools? The documentary film, Defies Measurement, asks, “What if the most important lessons learned in school are the ones that cannot be measured?” Filmmaker Shannon Puckett explores this question in a film featuring several experts on education, including Diane Ravitch, David Berliner, Linda Darling-Hammond, and David Kirp.

Writing for the website, Cloaking Inequity, Julian Vasquez Heilig said, “Defies Measurement strengthens the discussion about public education by exploring why it is so important to address the social and emotional needs of every student, and what happens when the wrong people make decisions for schools.” (Dr. Vasquez Heilig also appears in the film.)

Peter Greene, a self-described, “Grumpy old teacher trying to keep up the good classroom fight in the new age of reformy stuff,” gave the film a very strong review: “I cannot recommend enough that you watch Defies Measurement.“

Chapman University’s Chi Beta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education is hosting a screening of this new documentary on Wednesday, November 11, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in Irvine Lecture Hall. Admission is free, but space is limited. Chapman students, faculty, and staff are welcome. Save the date for Defies Measurement.
