Rather than a lengthy solo performed by the instructor, they suggest that learning is like a group improvisation performance, with each player (student) \u201cperpetually occupied\u201d. Researchers at San Francisco State University developed a tool they call decibel analysis for research in teaching (DART), that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sfsu.edu\/archive\/news-story\/sf-state-researchers-create-new-tool-measures-active-learning-classrooms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">measures the sound of active learning<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the \u201cextent to which instructors use innovative teaching methods\u201d in the classroom. We encourage you to use some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.celt.iastate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CELT226activelearningtechniques.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">active learning techniques<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in upcoming class sessions, and when you do, take a moment to listen to what that sounds like.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Are We Thinking Critically or Critical of Thinking?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Developing critical thinking (CT) skills has been a longstanding aim of our educational system. But can students develop the ability to think and\/or read critically if only exposed to texts, ideas, and art forms that reflect mainstream\/majority worldviews, perspectives, and belief systems? To be \u201ccritical\u201d in academia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/confessions-community-college-dean\/%E2%80%98critical%E2%80%99#.ZCWbBZEHd0Q.link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reed (2023)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> suggests <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cstudents must view themselves as peers of the producers of the work rather than either being unworthy of the wisdom or posing as a hanging judge.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is challenging for many students coming to us from K-12 systems that have become narrower in historic and literary content, as well as perspectives, scientific ideas, and even art allowed in classrooms today. University faculty must teach CT <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">explicitly<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with complex material by <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">intentionally<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 1) implementing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/views\/2020\/03\/02\/teaching-students-think-critically-opinion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">High-Leverage Critical Thinking Teaching Practices<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and 2) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">selecting learning activities that nurture the development of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/higher-order-thinking-skills-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">higher-order thinking skills <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">deliberate practice <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in their discipline.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Keeping <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Integrity<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at the Core of Student Work<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Conversations about cheating and academic integrity\u00a0have historically\u00a0echoed through the halls of institutions of\u00a0higher education, but with the explosion of digital tools and technologies these conversations have\u00a0taken on\u00a0higher frequency\u00a0and decibel levels. With the onslaught of plagiarism (and soon AI-generated detection) tools on the educational scene, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">how can we\u00a0keep integrity at the core of our work as opposed to policing student work?<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Rather than a\u00a0strategy\u00a0used to \u2018catch\u2019 students in the\u00a0act of academic dishonesty, tools like Turnitin are best used to teach critical literacy and research skills. Faculty can help\u00a0students learn\u00a0how to interpret\u00a0the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/marketing-tii-statamic-assets-us-west-2.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/marketing\/understanding_the_turnitin_similarity_report-an_educator_guide.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Turnitin Similarity Report<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> when submitting a piece of writing for review. The same is true about using Turnitin\u2019s newly released ChatGPT-generated content detection tool, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Originality<\/span><\/i><span
