James Lang suggests that this is an opportunity to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/how-to-create-compelling-writing-assignments-in-a-chatgpt-age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">think more creatively<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> about our writing assignments, and perhaps to move on from traditional writing forms, such as personal and argumentative essays, which are easily produced by AI tools. We encourage you to consider some of these ideas as you plan for next semester.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Support Student Learning with Mnemonic Devices\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mnemonic devices are <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mental tools<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to help students store information in memory and retrieve it when needed. Those who studied music probably used the mnemonics \u201c<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FACE\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and \u201cEvery Good Boy Does Fine\u201d to recall notes in the treble clef. In addition to supporting retrieval, mnemonics have been found to help students think critically and increase confidence in decision making. For example, during advanced pharmacy practice experiences (like clinicals, labs, simulations, etc.), mnemonics maximized navigation through a complicated decision-making process and minimized patient assessment errors (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3298398\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">mnemonics with pharmacy students<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">). \u201cMnemonics will not revolutionize education, but given the variety of techniques, their compatibility with other learning strategies, and effectiveness with certain materials, it seems that students would benefit from being familiar with them and knowing when and how to use them\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/manuscript\/2015-26723-002.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Putnam, 2015, p. 16<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">). Consider how you might use these mental tools with your students to support their study and learning.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Increase Course Evaluation Participation with Explanation<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why should students complete end-of-course evaluations? Do they understand the value in providing professors with useable feedback? Are they convinced anyone even looks at their comments? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ascnhighered.org\/ASCN\/change_theories\/collection\/evt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Value-Expectancy Theory of Motivation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> reminds us that even when someone believes they will do well at a task, without placing value in the task their motivation to complete the task will be low. <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Explanation<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is a powerful way to develop an understanding of the value of student feedback to course improvement. For example, you might use the analogy of the feedback they get from their professors on their completed assignments. What type of feedback is instructive or actionable, and what kind of feedback is not very useful for making improvements? The same is true of feedback on course evaluations. Explain that you need honest, actionable feedback that will help you improve the educational experience for future students in this course. You may even want to show them this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach.ucmerced.edu\/SATAL_Video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">short role-playing video<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> designed by undergraduate students at UC Merced, to elucidate the importance of providing practical, actionable comments.
