We also welcome guest posts from faculty who have a teaching tip they would like to share with their colleagues.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Course Workload: Perception vs Reality (Quantity vs Quality)<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">College students often cite course workload as a source of stress and have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teaforteaching.podbean.com\/e\/student-workload\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reported increases in workload<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in recent years. Is this a result of students\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facultyfocus.com\/articles\/course-design-ideas\/course-workload-what-influences-student-perceptions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">perceptions about workload<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or failure to approach learning effectively? Or is there a disconnect when it comes to determining how much work to assign students for a course and how much time this work takes students to complete?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many of our students are not adequately prepared for the college environment due to their learning experiences during the pandemic. This does not mean that we cannot, or should not, have appropriately challenging coursework, but we can be mindful of how much we are asking students to do, especially outside of class. We might also consider the idea that a high workload does not necessarily support student learning, and that \u201cflexibility and understanding can coexist with challenging students\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/the-redefinition-of-rigor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Supiano, 2022<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As indicated in the policy on credit hours in Chapman\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chapman0.sharepoint.com\/sites\/CurriculumManagement\/Shared%20Documents\/Forms\/AllItems.aspx?id=%2Fsites%2FCurriculumManagement%2FShared%20Documents%2FCurriculum%20Handbook%20and%20Program%20Proposal%20Forms%2FCurriculum%5FHandbook%2Epdf&amp;parent=%2Fsites%2FCurriculumManagement%2FShared%20Documents%2FCurriculum%20Handbook%20and%20Program%20Proposal%20Forms&amp;p=true&amp;ga=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Curriculum Handbook<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a 3-credit, 15-week course requires approximately three in-class contact hours and six hours of assigned coursework per week. Tools such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cte.rice.edu\/resources\/course-workload-estimator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Course Workload Estimator<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> can be helpful in estimating the time it will take students to complete tasks such as reading, writing assignments, and taking exams. You can hear Besty Barre, one of the creators of the workload estimator, talk more about how (and why) to use this tool in this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/podcast\/how-to-use-a-course-workload-estimator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">podcast episode<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hogan and Sathy note in their book on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/inclusified\/home\/resources-links\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">inclusive teaching<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that an instructor\u2019s job is \u201cnot to cover all the content, but to ensure that all students learn\u201d (2022, p. 63).
