We also welcome guest posts from faculty who have a teaching tip they would like to share with their colleagues.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Academic Integrity: Is it a Trait or a State?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-203 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/cetl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/06\/Mutai.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/cetl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/06\/Mutai.png 400w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/cetl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/06\/Mutai-254x300.png 254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2012, Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was just 10 meters from the finish line when he stopped running, confused by the signage, thinking he had already completed the race. Right behind him was a Spanish athlete, Ivan Fernandez, who caught up to him and <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">instead of passing him, he guided Mutai to victory<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. When asked, \u201cWhy did you do that?\u201d Ivan replied, \u201cHe was the rightful winner.\u201d As the story goes, a journalist insisted, \u201cBut why did you let the Kenyan win?\u201d Ivan replied, \u201cI didn\u2019t let him win, he was going to win. He created a gap that I couldn\u2019t have closed if he hadn\u2019t made a mistake.\u201d A journalist later replied, \u201cBut you could have won!\u201d And with much character Ivan replied, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBut what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of that medal?\u201d<\/span><\/i> (International Fair Play Committee, 2015).<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ivan\u2019s explanation reveals that his actions were founded upon a long-term <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">character trait<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, as opposed to a short-term situation or temporary <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">state<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. People would likely describe Ivan as a person of integrity, driven by a set of moral and ethical principles that, even when presented with the opportunity to cheat his way to the winner\u2019s spot, led him to do the right thing. Indeed, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">values such as <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">honesty<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">fairness<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">accepting personal responsibility<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> foundational to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">integrity in life and in academia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since the debut of ChatGPT (an artificial intelligence tool used to create human-like conversational dialogue), discussions about academic honesty once again echo through the halls of higher education. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Among professors, the greatest concern is preventing academic misconduct (e.g., cheating, plagiarism, collusion) and maintaining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/latrobe.libguides.com\/academic-integrity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">academic integrity<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0But what motivates students to cheat and\/or turn in AI-generated work as their own in the first place? <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the recent \u201cStudent Voice\u201d survey conducted by Inside Higher Ed and College Pulse, three-quarters of the college students surveyed (n=2000) identify pressure to do well, lack of preparation for exams, and heavy or unrealistic workloads as the most common reasons cited (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2021\/11\/23\/six-ideas-prioritizing-academic-integrity-among-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Student Views on Cheating).<\/span><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentdevelopmenttheory.weebly.com\/chickering.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Arthur Chickering&#8217;s student development theory<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> college experiences can play a significant role in the ongoing development of young people. He theorized seven stages that students must pass through during their college years, one of which results in the development of integrity&#8230; \u201cthe ability for students to personalize humanizing values and apply them to their own behavior\u201d (Chickering, 1969).\u00a0So, as we wrestle with how to respond to students\u2019 \u201clack of academic integrity,\u201d it\u2019s important to remember that college students are still on a developmental journey. Acting with integrity comes with time and experience.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Establishing policy on the use of AI tools such as ChatGPT requires a good deal of honest (and sometimes difficult) dialogue, active listening, accurate information, openness, and compromise among colleagues.\u00a0Yet even with a policy, we still need to determine how best to help students understand the concept and value of [academic] integrity, as well as ways to mitigate academic misconduct and\/or the misuse of these tools.\u00a0As you work to identify your own stance and the impact of AI in your discipline\/course, ask yourself:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">What experiences, in and out of the classroom, do students need to develop and value academic integrity?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Who in the campus community is responsible to ensure students understand the fundamental values of academic integrity?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Am I teaching the \u201cwhole\u201d student? Does my teaching extend beyond the development of students\u2019 cognitive (i.e., knowledge and thinking) and psychomotor (i.e., skills development) domains to include the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">affective domain<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (i.e., emotions\/feelings, beliefs, attitudes, and values)?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">What is the quality and quantity of evidence I am collecting to assess course learning outcomes? Are my assessments authentic, reflecting how the newly acquired knowledge and skills are applied in the field\/real-world?
