Students\u2019 Sense of Belonging is Essential to Their Success<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

We all share the human need to belong, but research suggests that students\u2019 sense of belonging is critical to their persistence and success in college <\/span>(NSSE, 2022)<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Sense of belonging<\/span><\/i> refers to a feeling of connectedness, being cared about, accepted, respected, valued, and important to the campus community \u2013 and according to <\/span>(Strayhorn, 2019)<\/span><\/a>, \u201cit can affect a student\u2019s degree of academic adjustment, achievement, aspirations, or even whether a student stays in school.\u201d Students who feel like they belong are more likely to be engaged in class and perform well. On the other hand, feelings of isolation or \u201cbelonging uncertainty\u201d are \u201cnegatively associated with achievement, performance, and well-being” (<\/span>Ryan et al., 2022<\/span><\/a>). <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
