Instead of students spending long periods of time studying or practicing something they\u2019ve just learned or right before an exam (as with traditional massed practice), distributed practice involves study and practice of the same information or skill spread out over several shorter sessions. Distributed Practice improves long-term memory and strengthens learning without increasing the amount of time needed to study and practice something new. Click <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.ucsd.edu\/undergraduate-program\/undergraduate-resources\/academic-writing-resources\/effective-studying\/spaced-practice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for information to share with students on how they can improve their study strategies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.evidencebasedteaching.org.au\/distributed-practice-massed-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">This site<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> provides some examples of how to implement distributed practice in your class.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Two is Always Better Than One<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instructionaldesign.org\/theories\/dual-coding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dual Coding Theory<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> assumes that humans process information in two independent but connected codes: a verbal code for language and a nonverbal code for mental imagery. Some cognitive psychologists argue that verbal information is stored into <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">semantic memory <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">while mental imagery is stored into <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">episodic memory (see <\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencetimes.com\/articles\/25747\/20200520\/episodic-and-semantic-memory-and-their-use-in-learning.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">How It Works In Learning)<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The implication for instruction is that we can strengthen the way students encode and subsequently retrieve new information by presenting information in dual formats \u2013 visual images and words. Consider supplementing visual representations such as graphic organizers, flow charts, diagrams, infographics, editable timelines, multimedia, etc.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sense of Belonging Linked to College Success<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We all share the human need to belong, but research suggests that students\u2019 sense of belonging is critical to their persistence and success in college <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nsse.indiana.edu\/research\/annual-results\/belonging-story\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">(NSSE, 2022)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sense of belonging<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> refers to a feeling of connectedness, being cared about, accepted, respected, valued, and important to the campus community \u2013 and according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Terrell-Strayhorn\/publication\/328109869_College_Students'_Sense_of_Belonging\/links\/5c3a847c92851c22a370cdfd\/College-Students-Sense-of-Belonging.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Strayhorn, 2019)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, \u201cit can affect a student\u2019s degree of academic adjustment, achievement, aspirations, or even whether a student stays in school.\u201d To build community and students\u2019 sense of belonging,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span
