Active class discussions also allow instructors to assess students\u2019 understanding of the material and can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1916903117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reduce learning and achievement gaps<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> among historically marginalized students. Creating active lectures and discussions takes a little bit of planning but is an effective way to support student learning. Yet, research tells us that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">new college students often don\u2019t know how to manage their own learning (i.e., lack <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">metacognitive or self-regulation skills<\/span>). <span data-contrast=\"none\">In their book,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/cat.fiu.edu\/resources\/how-learning-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">How Learning Works,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Ambrose and her colleagues (2010) suggest college instructors embed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/poorvucenter.yale.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/basic-page-supplementary-materials-files\/metacognition_handout.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">metacognitive strategies<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> into the planned curriculum because when students become aware of the learning process, they gain control over their learning.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cognitive Wrappers for <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Student Self-Reflection <\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To help students reflect on a previous assessment and to support their confidence and preparation for the next one, consider providing students with a low-stakes <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">cognitive wrapper<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0The purpose of this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachingnaked.com\/cognitive-wrappers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">evidence-based practice<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is to ask students to reflect on their personal learning and study behaviors.
