{"id":1057,"date":"2015-03-05T15:20:26","date_gmt":"2015-03-05T23:20:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/collections\/2015\/03\/05\/disneyland-is-burning\/"},"modified":"2015-03-05T15:20:26","modified_gmt":"2015-03-05T23:20:26","slug":"disneyland-is-burning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/2015\/03\/05\/disneyland-is-burning\/","title":{"rendered":"Disneyland is Burning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The night of Saturday, February 28th, Disneyland made headlines due to an unexpected fire that set &nbsp;trees ablaze near the attraction &#8220;It&#8217;s a Small World.&#8221; Thankfully, no one was injured during the mishap, and the fire was quickly extinguished.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire,&nbsp;<span id=\"misspelledal\">al<\/span>though they suspect it was related to the fireworks show. No one was injured and no damage was done to &#8220;It\u2019s A Small World&#8221;, which was&nbsp;briefly closed because of the fire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/articles\/fire-652713-quickly-anaheim.html\">Orange County Register<\/a>, February 28, 2015<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This unexpected occurrence is reminiscent of a piece in the Escalette Permanent Collection of Art entitled, &#8220;Disneyland is Burning.&#8221; The piece, painted by Jason Adkins, is currently on display at the University Advancement offices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2015\/03\/PictureHandler.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1088\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1088 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2015\/03\/PictureHandler.jpeg\" alt=\"piece of artwork\" width=\"569\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2015\/03\/PictureHandler.jpeg 569w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2015\/03\/PictureHandler-300x198.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 569px) 100vw, 569px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nTommy Freeman, an art critic from&nbsp;<em>Artweek<\/em>, said of his work that &#8220;even areas that read as solid fields of uniform color are actually loaded with aggressively applied paint, resulting in highly textured surfaces with very subtle color modulation.&#8221; In&nbsp;all, the Escalette Collection has two other Adkins&#8217; pieces gifted by the artist and are entitled&nbsp;<em>Sinister Minister&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>My Beloved Monster.&nbsp;<\/em><br \/>\nYou can see these works in Beckman Hall and at the&nbsp;West Palm offices.<\/p>\n<p>So while the actual Disneyland less than ten miles away from the Chapman campus may not still be burning, the Disneyland of Adkins&#8217; imagination burns bright. What are the odds of having such an appropriately titled piece only minutes away from an actual event? One could say&#8230;<em>it&#8217;s a small world after all!<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><em>All text and images under copyright.
