{"id":1185,"date":"2015-04-16T16:33:31","date_gmt":"2015-04-16T23:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/collections\/2015\/04\/16\/orange-high-school-gets-creative\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T06:13:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T06:13:16","slug":"orange-high-school-gets-creative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/2015\/04\/16\/orange-high-school-gets-creative\/","title":{"rendered":"Orange High School Gets Creative"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1188\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2015\/04\/photo-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1188\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2015\/04\/photo-2.jpg\" alt=\"students in a classroom\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/>Orange High students create their works of art after a lesson in abstract poetry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Monday, Chapman&#8217;s Escalette Permanent Collection of Art was very proud to participate in the Chapman University-Orange High School Literacies Partnership!<\/p>\n<p>Students from OHS have gathered every week after school&nbsp;at Chapman to&nbsp;participate in the 2015 Young Writers&#8217; Workshop, in collaboration with the John Fowles Center for Creative Writing. &nbsp;For this week&#8217;s session, the students&nbsp;were given a tour of the Escalette Collection&#8217;s contemporary art, specifically abstract expressionist-focused pieces in Beckman Hall. During&nbsp;the tour, students explored works&nbsp;such as Michael Reafsnyder&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>Floating&nbsp;<\/em>(2006) and Hassel Smith&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>At Miss Webb&#8217;s&nbsp;<\/em>(1963), and learned about the physical and compositional&nbsp;aspects of abstract expressionism.<\/p>\n<p>After the tour, the students learned about abstract writing styles, including those of authors Gertrude Stein and Virginia Woolf, that share similarities with visual abstraction.&nbsp;They then used these writings and the tour as inspiration for their own creative writing piece. To finish off the workshop, the students synthesized&nbsp;everything they&#8217;d learned and seen to create their own abstract expressionist pieces. &nbsp;They were absolutely fearless and color-savvy creators!<\/p>\n<p>On April 27th, the group will gather at Chapman for a community meeting to share their work from the Young Writers&#8217; Workshop, as well as&nbsp;their original artwork from this session.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><em>All text and images under copyright.
