The workshops were lead by <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/2016\/10\/06\/reni-gower\/\">Reni Gower<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/2016\/10\/13\/jorge-benitez\/\">Jorge Benitez<\/a>, whose works are currently on display on the second floor of Argyros Forum in the exhibition\u00a0<em>Geometric A<\/em><em>ljam\u00eda: A Cultural Transliteration<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2378\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2378\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/11\/DSCF3923.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2378 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/11\/DSCF3923.jpg\" alt=\"Papercutting workshop\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2378\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reni Gower and Jorge Benitez lead the workshop on November 7th, hosted in the Fish Interfaith Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Benitez, whose works focuses on Islamic patterns and geometry, began the workshop with a demonstration of perspective drawing. Gower followed with an introduction to papercutting, including its global history and its status as a democratic, universally accessible art form. Afterwards, Gower continued with a lesson on how to create these papercuts, explaining the difficult process of creating a repeatable image.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2380\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2380\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/11\/DSCF3951.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2380 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/11\/DSCF3951.jpg\" alt=\"Papercutting workshop\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In just a few hours, participants were able to create spectacular designs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chapman students, faculty, and staff eagerly took part in the workshop, and created their own complex designs. Participants began by drafting a design on plain paper before translating it to heavier card stock. Lastly, they used their template to create a vertical papercut on Tyvek\u00a0paper.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop accompanied <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/2016\/10\/03\/clear-cut-the-point-of-papercuts\/\"><em>Clear-cut: The Point of Papercuts<\/em><\/a>, a panel discussion on the art of papercuts\u00a0which featured Reni Gower and Jorge Benitez as well as other prominent Southern California papercut artists, including <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/2016\/10\/20\/bovey-lee\/\">Bovey Lee<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/2016\/11\/04\/margaret-sosa\/\">Margaret Sosa<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/2016\/10\/26\/chris-natrop\/\">Chris Natrop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A special thanks to the <a
