One work, <em data-start=\"235\" data-end=\"246\">Vann Nath<\/em>, reflects on the circumstances that led to an influx of immigration to the United States during the brutality of the Pol Pot regime. The piece pays homage to Vann Nath, a Cambodian artist and one of the few survivors of the S-21 prison camp, who was spared because of his ability to create portraits of the dictator. The incredibly careful, detailed lines that form Nath\u2019s face convey the dedication and reverence Huynh holds for one of the few Cambodian artists to survive the dictatorship.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4165\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4165\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2023\/08\/2023.16.1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4165\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2023\/08\/2023.16.1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2023\/08\/2023.16.1.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2023\/08\/2023.16.1-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2023\/08\/2023.16.1-1024x830.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2023\/08\/2023.16.1-768x623.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2023\/08\/2023.16.1-1536x1246.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4165\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phung Huynh, Michelle Sou Donut Box, serigraph on pink donut box, 2021.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"447\">Once in the United States, many Cambodian and Vietnamese immigrants opened donut shops as a path toward achieving the American Dream. This phenomenon was largely spurred by Ted Ngoy, the \u201cDonut King,\u201d who helped thousands of refugees settle in the U.S. by sponsoring them and assisting them in opening their own shops. Today, nearly 90% of independent donut shops in California are owned by Cambodian or Cambodian American (Khamerican) families.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"449\" data-end=\"737\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The second piece, <em data-start=\"467\" data-end=\"491\">Michelle Sou Donut Box<\/em>, reflects on the second generation of Khamericans\u2014the children of refugees who grew up working in their families\u2019 donut shops. Behind her portrait, the faint outline of a photograph of her and her parents standing in their donut shop is visible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2026\/03\/EDITED-2-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4515\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2026\/03\/EDITED-2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"519\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Her donut box series also serves as a way for Huynh to reflect on her own family&#8217;s history as refugees from Cambodia and Vietnam. Another drawing features a memory of her father translating for newly arrived refugees from Cambodia in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, after Huynh and her family were the first Southeast Asian family to arrive there.<\/p>\n<p>Huynh recalled powerful anecdotes from her family\u2019s journey, exploring stories from her childhood and tying them to her recent research on the cosmetic industry and the pressures it places on women of color. She explored how these systems shape identity and how her work aims to challenge these standards and recognize those who feel underrepresented.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAs an art history student and a Japanese-American, I resonated deeply with the themes and stories she presented, including strict beauty standards and the ongoing fight for the repatriation of looted museum objects,\u201d said Rylie Shimabukuro (\u201826 Art History, CCI minor.) \u201cTo hear her speak with such empathy for so many people was heartwarming, and to see her approach these moments with kindness was motivating.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Huynh also spoke about\u00a0<em>Our Voices Count,\u00a0<\/em>a serigraph that was originally displayed as a billboard in Los Angeles. The project, which Huynh participated in alongside other LA-based artists, focused on communicating a positive message and using art as a platform of empowerment for people across Los Angeles County. <em>Our Voices Count,\u00a0<\/em>was used to highlight information about the 2020 census, and includes images of close friends and family, including her son.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4514\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4514\" style=\"width: 445px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2026\/03\/PhungHuynh_CensusPrints-142.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4514\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2026\/03\/PhungHuynh_CensusPrints-142.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"445\" height=\"584\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phung Huynh, <em>Our Voices Count<\/em>, serigraph on paper, 2020.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFor me, the heart of this project is about social and racial justice, about inclusion and belonging, and about community care.
