Driven by large blocks of color, Lee constructs challenging perspectives between patchwork canvas and vivid acrylic paint. Although his recent work is more abstract and simplified, most of Lee\u2019s earlier work\u2014found across Chapman\u2019s campus\u2014establishes a narrative through recognizable imagery, silhouettes or outlines.<br \/>\nOne such series is inspired by the song, <em>Highwayman<\/em>, recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson (known as The Highwaymen). Each painting in the four-part series relates to a verse in the song, which tells of four lost souls: a highwayman, a sailor, a dam builder, and a starship flyer. The song is also David Lee\u2019s karaoke of choice.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-Hg8LvG9Hsfc\/UlcmZgthyrI\/AAAAAAAAFOs\/ZsdEj41w2uw\/s1600\/IMG_1136.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"272\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Highwayman<\/em>, 2003<br \/> Acrylic on Fabric<br \/> On loan from the artist.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">While music often influences the content of Lee\u2019s paintings, he instead listens to movies (most often from the 80s) while painting in his studio. Lee\u2019s work reflects his uncanny ability to find and hone the seed of an amazing story amid a flurry of sensory intake.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-vHy8D8JL2AA\/Ulcmc0OvSgI\/AAAAAAAAFO0\/ULcNA_NP3d4\/s1600\/IMG_1135.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"266\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Starship Flyer<\/em>, 2003<br \/> Acrylic on Fabric<br \/> On loan from the artist.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Throughout his career, Lee has had five solo shows and numerous group shows around\u00a0Southern California; he\u2019s taught at almost every college and University in Orange County; he\u2019s currently on the advisory board for the Orange County Center for the Arts and assists Tony Delap in his studio. At home, David\u2019s creativity is echoed in his son, Alistair\u2014the two constantly draw, sketch, and hatch impromptu construction projects; he and his wife, Julie, are expecting their second child this winter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In addition to his artwork on campus, David Lee has made a tremendous impact on the visual arts at Chapman University over the past 12 years: as an adjunct professor in the art department, collection manager for the University Permanent Collection and the Escalette Collection of Art, and most recently as the interim University curator, David\u2019s energy and ideas are indestructible.
