Cultures and concepts may shift at any time, and collide at will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">&#8211; Allison Bing on the work of Masami Teraoka in <em>Ascending Chaos: The Art of Masami Teraoka 1966-2006<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Masami Teraoka was born in 1936 in Onomichi, Hiroshima-ken, Japan. He graduated from Kwansei Gakuin University with a B.A. in Aesthetics in 1959. At the age of 25, he moved to the United States and attended Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where he graduated with a B.F.A. and went on to receive his M.F.A. in 1968.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_773\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-773\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/09\/2009.1.1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-773 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/09\/2009.1.1.jpg\" alt=\"piece of artwork\" width=\"580\" height=\"213\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-773\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/>Masami Teraoka <br \/><em>McDonald&#8217;s Hamburgers Invading Japan\/Tokyo Ginza Shuffle <\/em>, 1982 <br \/>Screenprint, 12 3\/8 x 29&#8243; <br \/>Gift of Edward Den Lau Estate, 2009<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Five of Teraoka\u2019s early works are housed in the Escalette Collection, four of which are currently on display in Beckman Hall. Teraoka\u2019s sense of humor and irony can be seen in the titles of these pieces, which include two works from the series&nbsp;<em>31 Flavors Invading Japan<\/em>. These pieces address the clash between Teraoka\u2019s own two personal cultures as well as the issue of cultural globalization. He was concerned at this time about the fast food industry homogenizing world tastes. These early works later developed into subjects concerning 21st century Western society&#8217;s moral hypocrisy, featuring stock characters that act to exemplify Teraoka&#8217;s portrayal of contradictions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><em>All text and images under copyright.
