Hello! My name is Emma Flemming, and I am a senior here at Chapman, double-majoring in Communication Studies and Psychology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally from Renton, Washington (20 minutes outside of Seattle), I came to Chapman three years ago following my passions of musical theater, choir, dance, photography, and a desire to be around other creative and academic individuals. When I was applying to college, my only criteria were a smaller school with a large creative and academic atmosphere, and after a simple Google search, Chapman piqued my interest. Of course, the year-long sunny atmosphere also made it hard not to want to attend.<\/span><\/p>\n

I came to Chapman as a declared Psychology major, initially wanting to pursue a career in therapy\/clinical psychology. When I started the Psychology program in the fall semester of my first year, I instantly fell in love with learning about people and relationships<\/span><\/p>\n

. After speaking to an employer at an HR company in Seattle, I was inspired to consider adding a communications-based degree to my undergraduate experience as well. I looked into the Communication Studies program on Chapman\u2019s website, and after speaking with an advisor about my goals, I applied to the program and declared my second major during my second semester at Chapman. The next semester, I joined the School of Communication Student Advisory Board (best decision ever!). Being a part of SAB has allowed me to become deeply connected with the School of Communication, which has helped me form great relationships with my peers and professors\u2014and ultimately guided me as I prepare to enter post-grad life next semester.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of academics, I have been fortunate to be a part of many activities and involvements during my time here at Chapman. Some of my main involvements have been executive leadership with my sorority, Pi Beta Phi, and Delight Ministries. Through my time in leadership, I learned invaluable skills such as public speaking, social event planning, legal affairs, relationship mediation, advising, and so much more. Younger me simply would not believe some of the responsibility I took on along the way, but the confidence it gave me\u2014confidence I now utilize in both my personal and professional life\u2014has been so helpful. I highly encourage everyone to try out any clubs or involvement opportunities that interest you\u2014you might meet your<\/span><\/p>\n

very best friends (I certainly did), figure out your dream career, and so much more!<\/span><\/p>\n

As I approach my last year at Chapman, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for every experience, both new and scary, that has shaped who I am now. Chapman\u2019s interdisciplinary approach and encouraging atmosphere not only allowed me to be myself in every way but also helped me become more confident in what I bring to the table. Following graduation, I plan to pursue a career in recruiting\/human resources,<\/span><\/p>\n

and truly would not have known what to do after graduation without both my majors, my involvements, my professors, and my peers. The unknown can be scary, but having gone through the \u201cunknown\u201d when moving 900 miles south to attend Chapman, it certainly feels like everything will be just fine!<\/span><\/p>\n

I am so honored to serve on the Student Advisory Board. Not only has it been a great way to get to know my new community at Chapman, but it has also shown me how amazing it is to work with and learn from others with different interests, backgrounds, and goals. I am excited to not only assist my peers in figuring out how to fit their passions into their experience at both Chapman and the School of Communication, but also to highlight and celebrate the amazing community of unique stories and individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n
