Hi everyone! My name is Avery Martin, and I am a sophomore majoring in Strategic Communication with a minor in Leadership Studies. I am from the Bay Area, but more specifically, Walnut Creek. I chose Chapman because I knew I wanted to stay in-state for college, and I also wanted to be in Southern California. When I first toured Chapman, I knew it was the place for me. I absolutely loved the campus, its location, the smaller class sizes, the different clubs and organizations, and the overall atmosphere. Basically, Chapman checked all my boxes. Some of my school involvements include being a part of Greek life (Alpha Chi Omega!!) and serving on the School of Communication Student Advisory Board.<\/span><\/p>\n

I started out as a Business major, and after taking some classes, I learned it wasn\u2019t the right fit for me. However, once I switched to Strategic Communication, everything fell into place; I felt confident, supported, and genuinely excited about my classes. That\u2019s what I value so much about the School of Communication. The sense of community makes it easy to feel connected and supported, which is why I wanted to join the advisory board in the first place. Because I know what it\u2019s like to feel uncertain, I want to be that supportive voice for other students who may be going through a similar experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve absolutely loved my experience here at Chapman and have made so many great memories along the way. One of the biggest turning points for me was finding my place within the School of Communication. After switching my major, I finally felt confident and excited about what I was studying. Classes like Public Speaking, Intro to SCC, and Mass Communication not only deepened my interest in the field but also introduced me to so many supportive, like-minded people. Another highlight of my Chapman experience has been going through sorority recruitment and joining Alpha Chi Omega. It gave me such a strong sense of belonging and led me to some of my closest friends.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of the classroom, I\u2019ve made countless memories, from beach days with friends to watching late-night TV shows with my roommates. I love spending my free time going on walks, grabbing a sweet treat, or going to concerts, basically anything that lets me unwind and have fun with the people I care about. One of my favorite stories is from my very first class here at Chapman, my FFC, where I met the girl who would later become one of my current roommates. It\u2019s such a great reminder that putting yourself out there can lead to amazing experiences you never expected.<\/span><\/p>\n

If I had one piece of advice for incoming students, it would be to step out of your comfort zone. Try new things, say yes more often, and trust that everything will work out the way it\u2019s supposed to. I used to stress about having a \u201cperfect\u201d college experience, but I\u2019ve learned that the best moments happen when you let go of expectations and just enjoy the journey.<\/span><\/p>\n
