{"id":1415,"date":"2018-10-01T22:35:30","date_gmt":"2018-10-01T22:35:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/community-relations\/2018\/10\/01\/new-students-finding-common-ground-at-cypress-street-school\/"},"modified":"2018-10-01T22:35:30","modified_gmt":"2018-10-01T22:35:30","slug":"new-students-finding-common-ground-at-cypress-street-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/community-relations\/2018\/10\/01\/new-students-finding-common-ground-at-cypress-street-school\/","title":{"rendered":"New Students Find Common Ground at Cypress Street School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Inside the last standing formerly segregated \u201cMexican school\u201d in Southern California, 21 new Chapman students learned about the past of the community they are joining from members of the <strong>Orange Barrio Historical Society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The students who visited the renovated schoolhouse \u2013 now owned by the University \u2013 were part of the Common Ground track of Chapman\u2019s Emerging Leaders early-orientation program for first-year students offered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/students\/services\/housing-and-residence\/index.aspx\">Office of Residence Life and First Year Experience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The group spent a day and a half on Aug. 19-20 visiting local sites and learning about area history such as Mendez v. Westminster, the landmark federal court decision that ended segregation in Orange County public schools. The students also met Orange Mayor Teresa \u201cTita\u201d Smith and visited Santa Ana, where they discussed gentrification and other issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s focused on educating students about Orange beyond what they might have thought about, the beaches and Disneyland,\u201d said Negeen Lotfi, program coordinator in Chapman\u2019s Office of Student Engagement. \u201cIt\u2019s about community relations and civic engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Area resident Paul Guzman, right, tells Natalie Standridge \u201922 and other students about local barrio history.
