The work of the Thompson Policy Institute<\/a> (TPI) is to propose real-world solutions to these barriers and disseminate ideas, practices, and policies to those who have influence over the lives of people with disabilities.\u00a0 These \u201cinfluencers\u201d include individuals with disabilities, their families, policymakers, caregivers, professionals, and even the general public who control the perception of disability and ability.\u00a0 This year, TPI, alongside Chapman\u2019s Attallah College of Educational Studies<\/a>, will host a virtual summit to inform the public about the critical issues facing people with disabilities, as well as their families, support communities, and the agencies that work on their behalf.\u00a0 This year\u2019s TPI DisAbility Summit will focus on research and practice in areas including\u00a0post-secondary transition and school inclusion for individuals with disabilities. \u00a0The event will be held over Microsoft Teams on Friday, Oct. 9, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.<\/p>\n

We are excited to have the Director of the California Department of Rehabilitation, and our 2020 Excellence in DisAbility award recipient, Joe Xavier<\/b> deliver the keynote address. In addition to years participating in advocacy and community organizations, Joe has more than 34 years of experience in business and public administration. As an immigrant, a blind consumer, and a beneficiary of the Department of Rehabilitation’s services, he has the experience and understand the challenges and opportunities available to individuals with disabilities. Further, he is aware of the services required to maximize an Individual’s full potential.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In addition, national transition experts Dr. Richard Rosenberg and Linda O’Neal, M.A. <\/b>will be presenting current transition initiatives happening in California. Their presentation titled Real World Transition Programming Leading to Competitive Integrated Employment<\/em> will detail the collaborative efforts of agencies in California to support people with disabilities as they transition from school to employment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The DisAbility Summit is free and open to the public, but registration is required<\/a>. The event will be closed captioned and Spanish translation will also be available (other translations available upon request).
