Nestled in between the coffee shops and antique stores of Old Towne Orange, it\u2019s clear that Full Circle Meaningful Marketplace is more than just another thrift store. The shop, which is operated by The Hub OC, offers a wide range of upcycled clothing, home goods and products from local artisans. All proceeds support Youth Centers of Orange in their mission to provide free after-school care to children in the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cKnowing that I’m helping make a difference in some children’s lives is really special to me,\u201d said Kevin Ivins, a Chapman University senior who has worked at the store for nearly three years as part of his work study program. Ivins is one of 24 students who currently work in the shop, assisting customers, working the register, sorting donations and helping to manage inventory.<\/p>\n
“Chapman University work-study students bring a refreshing burst of college spirit,\u201d said Diane Reynolds, director of Full Circle Marketplace. \u201cThey have fantastic energy, style, they work hard, and honestly, we couldn’t run this store without them. They are a daily dose of fun and productivity!” While most work-study jobs are on campus, a special arrangement with The Hub OC allows Chapman students to work for the non-profit organization instead. The job offers flexibility for the student workers, whose schedules can often be demanding. More importantly, it provides a vital connection to their community.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love meeting all of my coworkers, new and old, and making those connections, and I also love the customers,\u201d said Lyssy Salvador, a senior dance major who has worked for Full Circle for two years. \u201cWe get a lot of great people, a lot of regulars, who come into the store. It’s always nice to see them coming back and giving back.\u201d Co-workers include a growing number of volunteers, including middle school and high school students as well as retired people.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn’t have the chance to meet that demographic if it weren’t for the store,\u201d says Salvador. \u201cThere are so many people who have collaborated and contributed a lot to the store, making it cozy and welcoming. That’s the big factor and the heart of the whole program.\u201d Ivins appreciates that his job is more meaningful than just a way to pay for his tuition. \u201cIt isn’t just a job, but it’s like a family,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
