Students in Chapman University Greek organizations came together recently to make no-sew blankets for Marines stationed overseas. The event was part of the Love Orange City-Wide Volunteer Day, which takes place each year on the second Saturday in October. What began as a goal of creating 50 blankets turned into an impressive success, thanks to the strong turnout and support from the student community.<\/p>\n
Initially, the event organizers anticipated around 40 student volunteers. However, word quickly spread, and 45 students showed up to contribute their time and energy. The participants included representatives from all sororities on campus and three fraternities, creating a collaborative, inclusive atmosphere that united students from across campus organizations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were blown away by the number of students who came to help,\u201d said Maika Suaya, vice president of community advancement for Chapman Panhellenic. \u201cThe energy in the room was incredible\u2014everyone was eager to pitch in and make a difference. It\u2019s a testament to the compassion and commitment our students have for supporting others.\u201d<\/p>\n
The no-sew blankets, chosen for their warmth and ease of assembly, were the perfect project for a wide range of volunteers, regardless of crafting skill. As the students worked together, the room filled with conversations, laughter and a strong sense of purpose. Their initial goal was to complete 50 blankets by the end of the day. With so many hands-on deck, they were able to exceed expectations, completing a total of 80 blankets\u2014an amazing accomplishment and a meaningful contribution to the Marines.<\/p>\n
The only reason the event came to a close was that the team ran out of materials. Volunteers were more than ready to keep going, with many expressing interest in participating in future events. \u201cWe\u2019re so proud of what we accomplished today,\u201d said Suaya. \u201cIt\u2019s a small gesture, but we know it will mean a lot to those serving our country.\u201d Suaya and her colleagues on the Panhellenic board extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated.
