{"id":327,"date":"2016-04-21T21:43:20","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T21:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/community-relations\/2016\/04\/21\/poetic-partnership\/"},"modified":"2016-04-21T21:43:20","modified_gmt":"2016-04-21T21:43:20","slug":"poetic-partnership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/community-relations\/2016\/04\/21\/poetic-partnership\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetic partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michelle Ramirez, a senior at Orange High School, stepped to the front of an Argyros Forum lecture hall on a Monday after school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat a fool I am to have thought I was the only flower in your garden,\u201d she began, reading a poem she wrote about how quickly high school love can fade, and comparing her rivals to thorny roses. \u201cAnd here I am, a hopeless daisy, drying out waiting to be no more but a memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez is one of 24 OHS students in a semester-long workshop guided by six MFA students and assistant professor of English Jan Osborn, Ph.D., as part of the Chapman University\/Orange High School Literacies Partnership in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/research-centers\/john-fowles-center\/\">John Fowles Center for Creative Writing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The high school students will share their poetry and short fiction in a community reading Monday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in Beckman Hall 404 as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poets.org\/national-poetry-month\/home\">National Poetry Month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49138\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49138\" style=\"width: 745px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49138\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/04\/MG_1712_edit-740x327.jpg\" alt=\"When the poets gather, they fill the better part of a classroom. Front Row, seated, Cody Mauro (MFA &#8217;16), Christine Nguyen, Nery Martinez, Kayla Walker, Bianca Villegas &#8217;19, and Devin Boliinger.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The reading is one of the highlights of a spring workshop now in its fifth year that this month included a session with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/pico-iyer\">Pico Iyer<\/a>, the author and essayist who spends each April at Chapman as a Presidential Fellow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just opens up something in them about identities,\u201d Osborn said after watching OHS junior Himmat \u201cMatt\u201d Lodin approach Iyer after hearing him speak about his multiple identities as Indian, English and Californian. \u201cMy parents are from Afghanistan,\u201d Lodin told Iyer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49145\" style=\"width: 428px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49145\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/04\/down-the-street-580x431.jpg\" alt=\"Student work from each semester is published in a small poetry collection, or chap book, titled &quot;Down the Street.&quot;\" width=\"428\" height=\"318\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Student work from each semester is published in a small poetry collection, or chap book, titled &#8220;Down the Street.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For the second year, the OHS students also will produce a chapbook, or small published collection of their work, that they titled aptly: <em>Down the Street<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the remarkable aspects of the workshop is that it is a voluntary endeavor, not only for the high school students but also for the group of MFA instructors and one undergraduate all led by coordinator Kimberly Kotel (MA \u201916, MFA \u201917), the only one of the six graduate students who is paid.<\/p>\n<p>Lodin, partial to wearing a backwards New England Patriots cap, signed up for the weekly sessions after learning about the workshop from his AP English Language and Composition teacher, Laurie Wielenga.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to start learning how to write better because writing-wise, I\u2019m not too sharp, a little above basic,\u201d Lodin said. \u201cWe did this activity in the first meeting and it was pretty fun \u2013 they gave us a certain amount of letters and we had to make a story using the first letter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Later, he brought friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all think it\u2019s going to help us with writing and it\u2019s going to look good on college applications when you tell them, \u2018Hey, I was in a creative writing workshop.\u2019\u00a0 They\u2019ll be like wow, how professional.\u201d (Two seniors in the workshop, Daniel Espiritu and Devin Bolinger, already have been admitted to Chapman.)<\/p>\n<p>For the instructors, the seminar is a chance to add another type of teaching experience to their academic resumes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a little different from teaching freshman comp,\u201d said instructor Robert Matt Taylor (MFA \u201916). \u201cThis is closer to what most of us MFAs do and want to do.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49147\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49147\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49147\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/04\/MG_1710_edit-580x387.jpg\" alt=\"Orange High School sophomore Samuel Wilson discusses his and fellow students' poetry in the poetry workshop.\" width=\"430\" height=\"287\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Orange High School sophomore Samuel Wilson discusses his and fellow students&#8217; writing in the poetry workshop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a freshness of perspective. Most of these kids are completely uninitiated to this. The first couple of weeks they have that methodical approach. Then they realize they can begin to improvise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really want that sort of response. We want them to have a real relationship with what they turn in and really care about it. It\u2019s not an assignment. It\u2019s extracurricular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The element of fun and writing about deeply personal subjects is part of the appeal, the students say. Plus, their newfound creative writing skills carry over to their regular schoolwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI usually get writer\u2019s block, and with this program they\u2019ve taught us strategies,\u201d Lodin said.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez said the instructors have taught her how \u201cto bring something as simple as a piece of paper to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that helps me do essays,\u201d she said. \u201cThey don\u2019t have to be poetry. They can just be essays. How can you get the readers\u2019 attention? How can you captivate them and make them remember you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kotel, the MFA student who leads the lessons and guides the group discussions of the young writers\u2019 work, said the seminar helps her remember something else<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey inspire me all the time, just with what they write,\u201d she said. \u201cThe passion for it, I guess, reminds you of why you like to write.
