The prestigious awards are given each year by the foundation to recognize California&#8217;s top examples of design excellence and historic preservation.<\/p>\n<p>The Digital Media Arts Center \u2013 known on campus as \u201cthe DMAC,\u201d will be honored in the restoration category. A former manufacturing plant for California Wire and Cable Co., the DMAC underwent a complete renewal in 2014 under the direction of AC Martin Partners.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41338\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41338\" style=\"width: 668px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-41338\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/10\/DMAC-animation-classroom-740x493.jpg\" alt=\"chairs in classroom\" width=\"668\" height=\"445\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41338\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An animation lab at the new Digital Media Arts Center facilitates hand-drawn and digital animation work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The awards are the latest honors to acknowledge Chapman\u2019s preservation activities as it adapts historic buildings on its campus. In 2015 the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/happenings\/2015\/05\/08\/chapman-university-honored-with-spirit-of-old-towne-award-by-otpa\/\">Spirit of Old Towne Award<\/a> was awarded to Chapman for the makeover of the former Mennonite Pilgrim Church at 145 W. Sycamore. In 2014 the Orange Barrio Historical Society and Chapman received the Orange Public Library Foundation\u2019s Legacy Award for their collaborative work in preserving the historic <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/happenings\/2013\/03\/27\/a-bright-new-role-for-historic-cypress-street-school\/\">Cypress Street Schoolhouse<\/a>, which once served as a segregated \u201cMexican school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Key to the re-purposing of the DMAC was the merging of the building\u2019s industrial character with its new life as a high-tech center for digital storytellers at Chapman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/dodge\/\">Dodge College of Film and Media Arts<\/a>, said Kris Eric Olsen, vice president of Campus Planning and Operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy adapting this historic structure it preserves the embodied energy that went into the manufacture of the original materials and assembling them on-site.\u00a0No one has ever expressed it better than President Teddy Roosevelt, who said, \u2018Do what you can, with what you have, where you have it,\u2019\u201d Olsen said.<\/p>\n<p>Among the distinct elements of the design was the restoration of the original brick fa\u00e7ade, and the renovation of both the clerestory windows and the interior cross-strut beams. Housed inside are state-of-the art studios, classrooms, a screening theater, motion capture stage and walls whose surfaces are designed to be doodled on.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47057\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47057\" style=\"width: 668px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-47057\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2015\/12\/DMAC-exterior-740x494.jpg\" alt=\"building\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The DMAC&#8217;s restored vintage brick facades echo the industrial history of the area. Photo\/ Tom Bonner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An open-air patio flanked by a parking structure and a half basketball court were also part of the overall re-purposing of the site, located in the industrial area of the Old Towne Orange Historic District.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation award will be presented in September. It is the third architectural honor for the DMAC and AC Martin Partners. The American Institute of Architects Long Beach\/South Bay Chapter honored the building with a Citation Award in the Historic Preservation Category.
