As I drive into the Lastinger parking structure on\u00a0campus and pass the work site for the new Musco Center for the Arts, I am reminded how close the\u00a0College of Performing Arts (CoPA) is to realizing the\u00a0dream of having a home in a state-of-the art theatre to\u00a0showcase our performances.<\/p>\n

The Musco Center for the Arts is nearly ready: \u00a0the\u00a0outer structure of the Center\u2019s inner chamber is almost\u00a0entirely built and the external structure is scheduled\u00a0to be finished by the end of the Fall 2014 Semester. I\u00a0am delighted our Chapman students and faculty will\u00a0soon have the same opportunity I have had to create\u00a0and perform in a world-class facility. As a professional\u00a0dancer, I experienced the joy of performing on the\u00a0stage of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing\u00a0Arts in Washington, DC and knew firsthand the\u00a0privilege of being able to perform in a world-class\u00a0theatre. As a choreographer in Seattle, WA, I had the\u00a0creative advantage of producing my works in one of\u00a0the finest dance theatres in the country: Meany Hall\u00a0for the Performing Arts, which has hosted many of\u00a0the finest dance companies in the country such as\u00a0Alvin Ailey, Hubbard Street Dance, and Paul Taylor.\u00a0And I will never forget the thrill of watching the\u00a0company I founded, Spectrum Dance Theater, perform\u00a0at the Lucent Danstheater, the phenomenal home of\u00a0Ji\u0159\u00ed Kyli\u00e1n\u2019s Nederlands Dans Theater in Den Haag,\u00a0Netherlands. The significance and importance of the\u00a0Musco Center to our college, campus and community\u00a0cannot be overstated \u2013 it will have a tremendous\u00a0impact and will transform all that we do! CoPA will be\u00a0forever grateful to the visionary leadership of Paul and\u00a0Marybelle Musco and all the other donors who joined\u00a0in to help make this dream become an amazing reality.<\/p>\n

The Musco Center for the Arts demonstrates the\u00a0incredible progress CoPA has made in such a short
\nperiod of time. The 2014-15 school year marks the\u00a0college\u2019s eighth in existence and my eighth year
\nserving in a leadership role: four years as Associate\u00a0Dean and the start of my fourth year as Dean. I am
\nso very proud of CoPA\u2019s accomplishments and have\u00a0deeply enjoyed every minute of its transformation into\u00a0an outstanding center for performing arts education.<\/p>\n

IMPORTANT MILESTONES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Important CoPA milestones during my tenure here\u00a0include: receiving national accreditation for the Department of Dance and in 2014 its re-accreditation\u00a0for 10 years from the National Association of Schools\u00a0of Dance; initial accreditation for the Department of\u00a0Theatre from the National Association of Schools\u00a0of Theatre; creation of the nation\u2019s very first screen\u00a0acting degree program through the collaboration of\u00a0Dodge College of Film and Media Arts and the CoPA\u00a0Department of Theatre; establishment of the Henri Temianka String Professorship and Scholarship in\u00a0honor of the renowned violin virtuoso, conductor and\u00a0music educator; and the creation of the Angela Gitelson\u00a0Freidman Family Flute Scholarship, the namesake of\u00a0which is an avid music patron and former flutist.<\/p>\n

Two recent program additions to our college include\u00a0our Summer Choral Music Camp for high school
\nstudents and the President\u2019s Piano Series. The Summer\u00a0Choral Music Camp, under the direction of Professor\u00a0Angel V\u00e1zquez-Ramos, just completed its third year. Generously underwritten by Christine and Lon Cross and the Klein Family Foundation and others passionate about community outreach, this camp has proven to be both a positive music-driven learning experience for underserved youth in Orange County, while at the same time providing our Chapman students the opportunity to understand what it might be like to teach in an urban high school setting. The President\u2019s Piano Series, made possible by Kawai America and the Law Firm of Law and Lewis, just completed its successful second season and brought internationally acclaimed pianists to perform for our students and our Southern California communities.<\/p>\n

Another source of pride is the additions and upgrades to our facilities. Through the generosity of Chapman trustee, respected Orange County business leader and philanthropist Judith Garfi-Partridge, I was able to create additional space for our Dance department — the Partridge Dance Center Annex. What\u2019s more, I have spearheaded essential upgrades to the Waltmar Theatre including new paint, carpet, seating and lighting, and a refurbished box office, thanks to the continued support of the Waltmar Foundation and the Schmid family.<\/p>\n

We have accomplished so very much in such a short\u00a0time. However, no triumph stands out more than the\u00a0countless outstanding performances and scholarship\u00a0achievements of our students and faculty, which\u00a0have been recognized locally, regionally, nationally\u00a0and internationally. During the 2013-14 academic\u00a0year alone, CoPA presented over 110 performances\u00a0attended by more than 11,000 Chapman students,\u00a0faculty, staff, neighbors, friends, and true devotees of\u00a0the performing arts.<\/p>\n

Because of the ongoing successes of our alumni and\u00a0our students, CoPA\u2019s reputation continues to grow,\u00a0as does interest in our degree programs. Last year,\u00a0the College auditioned a record-breaking number of\u00a0theatre, dance and music students and for the Fall\u00a02014 Semester, we subsequently welcome one of our\u00a0largest freshman classes to date. The majors CoPA\u00a0represents\u2014dance, music and theatre\u2014have become\u00a0some of the most competitive and selective on campus,\u00a0a true testament to our faculty\u2019s hard work and the\u00a0direction I have set forth.<\/p>\n

ENSURING A PLACE FOR THE ARTS IN OUR FUTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the start, my vision for this college has not\u00a0wavered: I am committed to providing our students
\nwith the finest artistic training and academic\u00a0opportunities, emphasizing artistic collaboration and
\ninnovative curricular approaches while simultaneously\u00a0expanding our community outreach programs. I
\nbelieve this three-pillared approach sets our college\u00a0apart from others and continues to raise Chapman\u2019s\u00a0College of Performing Arts higher in national\u00a0prominence. Not only do we train great performers,\u00a0we develop a generation of artists who graduate with\u00a0the tools and capacity to create new means of artistic\u00a0expression we have yet to even imagine.<\/p>\n

Educating young artists about the value the arts\u00a0bring to our society and the impact the arts have on\u00a0our communities has long been my personal mission.\u00a0I also believe that proactively reaching out to our\u00a0local community provides an important real-world\u00a0component of our college students\u2019 educational\u00a0experience. Our community programs offer a nontraditional\u00a0classroom where young artists learn\u00a0practical skills and develop artistic sensibilities. That\u00a0is why I have worked so diligently to implement\u00a0programs like our Summer Choral Music Camp\u00a0and High School Dance Day and why I continue to\u00a0support the Henry Kemp-Blair Shakespeare Festival, celebrating its 40th anniversary this February. All\u00a0three of these programs provide young people in our\u00a0community with an artistic experience that would\u00a0otherwise be unavailable to them, while at the same\u00a0time instilling a love of the performing arts\u2026.which\u00a0will last a lifetime.<\/p>\n

There is a tremendous amount of exciting and creative activity going on in the halls of the\u00a0College of Performing Arts. I am extremely proud of\u00a0the work I have done for CoPA these past eight years\u00a0\u2013 and all of it would not have been possible without\u00a0your support. Whether through the purchase of a\u00a0ticket, volunteering your time, or making a financial\u00a0donation, your commitment to the performing arts at Chapman and your shared belief in the tremendous\u00a0value the arts bring to our world lies at the heart of\u00a0the College of Performing Arts\u2019 success.
