The goal of the program is to leverage the lessons learned through the exploration of Shakespearean theatre to help incarcerated and post-incarcerated adults and youths develop life skills that will ensure their successful reintegration into society.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1605\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1605\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/copa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2015\/03\/2006-04-03-ShakespeareBehindBars2-091_525.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1605\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1605\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/copa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2015\/03\/2006-04-03-ShakespeareBehindBars2-091_525.jpg\" alt=\"Luther Luckett Correctional Complex, LaGrange, KY\" width=\"525\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/copa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2015\/03\/2006-04-03-ShakespeareBehindBars2-091_525.jpg 525w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/copa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2015\/03\/2006-04-03-ShakespeareBehindBars2-091_525-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Shakespeare Behind Bars&#8221; was filmed at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex, LaGrange, KY.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Shakespeare Behind Bars: Changing Lives, One Scene at a Time<\/h3>\n<p>Called\u00a0<a title=\"Shakespeare Behind Bars\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shakespearebehindbars.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shakespeare Behind Bars<\/a>, the program began at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in Kentucky. Now in its 20th year, Shakespeare Behind Bars (SBB) has since grown to include 15 programs in Kentucky and Michigan. What\u2019s more, it boasts a recidivism rate of less than one tenth of the national average for its participants.<\/p>\n<p>According to the SBB website, the core values behind the program allow each participant the opportunity to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop a lifelong passion for learning, especially those participants who are at high risk of not completing or continuing their education;<\/li>\n<li>Develop literacy skills (reading, writing, and oral communication), including those participants who are classified as learning disabled and\/or developmentally challenged;<\/li>\n<li>Develop decision making, problem solving, and creative thinking skills;<\/li>\n<li>Develop empathy, compassion, and trust;<\/li>\n<li>Nurture a desire to help others;<\/li>\n<li>Increase self-esteem and develop a positive self-image;<\/li>\n<li>Take responsibility for the crime\/s committed;<\/li>\n<li>Become a responsible member of a group, community, and family;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Learn tolerance and peaceful resolution of conflict;<\/li>\n<li>Relate the universal human themes contained in Shakespeare\u2019s works to themselves including their past experiences and choices, their present situation, and their future possibility;<\/li>\n<li>Relate the universal themes of Shakespeare to the lives of other human beings and to society at-large;<\/li>\n<li>Return to society as a contributing member.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Recidivism Rates:<br \/>\nNational average = 60%<br \/>\nKentucky = 29.5%<br \/>\n<strong>Shakespeare Behind Bars = 5.8%<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1608\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/copa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2015\/03\/Tofteland.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1608\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1608 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/copa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2015\/03\/Tofteland.jpg\" alt=\"Director Curt L. Tofteland (third from left) works with inmates at a rehearsal for the Shakespeare Behind Bars program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Documentary\u00a0Reveals Program Successes<\/h3>\n<p>In 2005, SBB became the subject of an award-winning documentary that made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Written and directed by Hank Rogerson and produced by Jilann Spitzmiller through\u00a0Philomath Films, the story\u00a0follows the nine-month process of bringing William Shakespeare\u2019s play, <em>The Tempest<\/em>, to performance by a group of inmates under the direction of SBB Founder Curt L. Tofteland at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex.<\/p>\n<p>Philomath Films asserts, \u201cThe prisoners cast themselves in roles reflecting their personal history and fate. Their individual stories, including information about their heinous crimes, are interwoven with the plot of <em>The Tempest<\/em> as the inmates delve deeply into the characters they portray while confronting their personal demons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of Chapman University\u2019s <a title=\"Shakespeare Reimagined\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/events\/shakespeare-reimagined\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Shakespeare Reimagined<\/a> program this semester, a special screening of <em>Shakespeare Behind Bars<\/em> will take place\u00a0March 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Waltmar Theatre. As a bonus, the Department of Theatre has invited Mr. Tofteland, who will speak before the start of the film and answer audience questions after the screening.
