It is a challenging musical\u00a0for many reasons; actors must infuse every\u00a0moment with energy worthy not only of\u00a0immortal rock stars, but also of vulnerable\u00a0humans. The Pinball Wizard of <em>The Who\u2019s\u00a0Tommy<\/em> experiences the glories of rock and\u00a0roll and the dangers of celebrity worship as\u00a0he searches for self and home.<\/p>\n<p>In 1969, when guitarist Pete Townshend\u2019s\u00a0rock album, which informed <em>The Who\u2019s\u00a0Tommy<\/em>, was released, the world of music\u00a0had reached an age of great rock bands.\u00a0These artists were pushing musical boundaries and taking daring risks like\u00a0never before. Music of earlier decades was\u00a0considered sugar-coated and mellow, while\u00a0the social commentary of new acts like The\u00a0Rolling Stones and The Who influenced\u00a0listeners to stop and take notice of issues,\u00a0and to react and rebel, as rock and roll\u00a0swept the globe. This production exhibits\u00a0the raw traits that make this show so\u00a0appealing to many. There is no pretense,\u00a0just exploration of real emotions.<\/p>\n<p>With success comes celebrity, and during\u00a0the 1960s and \u201970s, stars were treated\u00a0as untouchable gods. Grappling with his\u00a0own celebrity, Townshend became an\u00a0avid follower of Meher Baba, a religious\u00a0leader from India who was mute and only\u00a0communicated through letters or hand\u00a0signals. He gained a celebrity following\u00a0when he traveled to the West.1 Townshend\u00a0was inspired by Baba\u2019s journey, stating\u00a0to <em>Rolling Stone Magazine<\/em>, \u201cthe process\u00a0of writing was controlled by my direct\u00a0involvement with Baba. On a basic working\u00a0level, songs like \u2018I\u2019m Free,\u2019 \u2018Pinball Wizard\u2019\u00a0and a couple of others are very much\u00a0Baba.\u201d2 In <em>The Who\u2019s Tommy<\/em>, Tommy gains\u00a0his celebrity status as a \u201cPinball Wizard\u201d\u00a0and amazes everyone at his skills despite\u00a0his disabilities, gaining a cult following\u00a0which ultimately leaves him as he struggles\u00a0to reclaim his life as his own.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy\u2019s secrecy, seduction, and\u00a0\u201cSensation,\u201d coupled with interpersonal\u00a0trauma, loss, and, ultimately, triumph\u00a0remain relevant today because, as\u00a0Townshend said, \u201cit is life.\u201d2 The Pinball\u00a0Wizard\u2019s journey to himself begins with\u00a0acceptance and awareness of the world\u00a0around him.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1 \u201cBrief Meher Baba Biography | Meher Spiritual\u00a0Center.\u201d Brief Meher Baba Biography | Meher\u00a0Spiritual Center.
