I grew up as a competitive dancer, and I wanted to perform professionally. At the time I was more interested in commercial dance\u2014film and television\u2014so I chose to head to the West Coast. Chapman offered me an academic and\u00a0a talent\u00a0scholarship,\u00a0and it\u00a0ended up being a\u00a0great fit.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During my\u00a0freshman\u00a0year, I realized the school\u2019s mission and curriculum\u00a0were focused on building global citizens. That interdisciplinary environment is how I discovered Peace Studies, which\u00a0took me into writing, political science, ethics, conflict\u00a0resolution\u00a0and international affairs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The dance program\u00a0also\u00a0went beyond preparing dancers for the stage\u00a0\u2014\u00a0deep into history, pedagogy, and somatic psychology.\u00a0I explored\u00a0how\u00a0Dance\/Movement Therapy (DMT) could help adolescents in underserved communities heal from trauma\u00a0through\u00a0self-expression\u00a0and\u00a0social skills. Becoming a proficient dancer\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0happen overnight\u2014it takes years of showing up on time, refining your craft. That practice threads itself into your professional life.\u00a0Dancers\u00a0also\u00a0live in front of a mirror:\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0constantly forced to self<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2011<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">evaluate and correct.\u00a0\u00a0In leadership, I always start with self-questioning and accountability.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There\u2019s\u00a0also the social dimension. Effective leaders need\u00a0very strong\u00a0emotional and social intelligence, and\u00a0the performing arts\u00a0teaches\u00a0you to adapt, collaborate, and\u00a0wear many different hats\u00a0\u2014\u00a0communicating both physically and verbally. What were the pivotal moments or mentors who accelerated that transition?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A\u00a0friend\u00a0who had\u00a0danced for Holland America\u00a0told me it was\u00a0a\u00a0great opportunity\u00a0to travel, meet interesting people, and figure out what\u00a0I\u00a0wanted\u00a0to do next. He was right. Ship life\u00a0is\u00a0incredibly\u00a0rewarding sociological experience\u00a0\u2014\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0forming friendships and meeting people from all\u00a0walks\u00a0of\u00a0life\u00a0and cultures amidst the humbling power of the ocean and visiting\u00a0new places.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2017, I\u00a0was the dance captain aboard\u00a0Eurodam\u00a0when\u00a0Bill Prince,\u00a0then\u00a0VP of Entertainment, came onboard for a town hall. I asked a few questions and\u00a0offered some\u00a0practical\u00a0ideas around\u00a0guest experience\u00a0and\u00a0performer\u00a0retention. That\u00a0piqued his interest, and he asked for a follow-up meeting. We stayed connected, and eventually\u00a0he\u00a0encouraged me to\u00a0apply for\u00a0a\u00a0Production Manager\u00a0role.\u00a0I got\u00a0the\u00a0job.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A few months later, I\u00a0joined the\u00a0core production team for our partnership cruises with Oprah Winfrey and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O, The Oprah Magazine,<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which gave me more visibility.\u00a0By the end of 2018, I was offered a\u00a0shoreside role\u00a0in Seattle as Manager of Entertainment Operations.\u00a0Seven years later,\u00a0here I am.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Holland America Line has hired multiple Chapman alumni. What do you see in Chapman\u00a0grads\u00a0that\u00a0fits\u00a0shipboard entertainment and shipboard\u00a0life?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was important to me to make sure the opportunity was visible to graduating students and fellow alumni. Many performing artists\u00a0aren&#8217;t\u00a0even aware of the different tracks within the entertainment business. So,\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0post job listings\u00a0in the alumni network\u00a0just so people could\u00a0see:\u00a0here\u2019s\u00a0a dancer doing something different, and this path exists.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What I see in Chapman\u00a0grads\u00a0goes back to my own experience.\u00a0The education\u00a0is rigorous. Even as a dance major, you\u00a0had\u00a0to study\u00a0\u2014\u00a0extensive research, writing, and critical\u00a0thinking.\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0a degree of intellectual curiosity that comes from those who\u00a0succeed\u00a0in that environment.\u00a0I also know who I was at 18 and who I was at 22 when I came out of Chapman. Focus on\u00a0identifying\u00a0your strengths\u00a0\u2014the\u00a0things you find important, the things that drive you.\u00a0Understanding what you value most and looking for opportunities that\u00a0align\u00a0with those\u00a0values gives you\u00a0the best chance of success.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0plan too far out \u2014 three years is\u00a0plenty.\u00a0Your track may not be linear,\u00a0and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0OK. If\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0determined\u00a0to stretch your performance career as long as possible, go for it.\u00a0But if\u00a0it&#8217;s not serving you\u00a0the way you imagined,\u00a0know that\u00a0a\u00a0well-rounded Chapman education will prove its worth over and over again\u00a0and open far more doors than the stage alone.<\/span><span
