As any pre-health student can attest to, there is so much importance placed on getting involved in leadership, research, and patient care, all while keeping the GPA up. I have come to realize just how many opportunities are available at Chapman through its tight-knit community of caring faculty and staff. I hope that my story provides some ease for students who are in the same boat that I was.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Erin-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3103\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3103 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Erin-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Erin-1.jpg 459w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Erin-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a> As a freshman Health Sciences major, I started by becoming a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/copehealthscholars\/\">COPE Health Scholar at St. Joseph Hospital<\/a>\u2014a program that Dr. Sumida recommended to me. I was able to get clinical exposure and take care of patients in departments such as the Pulmonary Renal, General Surgery, Oncology, ICU, and Emergency departments. After completing the program, I had over 290 hours of patient care and an ardent desire to become a Physician. Now, as a Senior, I work as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chapmanfirstaid\/\">First Aid Team<\/a> Member for Special Events at Chapman University through the Department of Fire and Life Safety.<\/p>\n<p>My clinical exposure was sufficient, but I lacked leadership and research. After approaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/frank-frisch\">Dr. Frisch<\/a> with my concerns, he invited me to be a part of his Bone Metabolism Lab, where I have researched about Postmenopausal Osteoporo<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture5.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3107\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3107 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture5.jpg 563w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture5-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>sis. I have presented my research twice at the Chapman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/research\/center-for-undergraduate-excellence\/events\/student-research-day.aspx\">Student Scholar Symposium<\/a>, and I will be presenting at the Experimental Biology Conference in April of 2020 with hopes to publish before I graduate. With this experience under my belt, I was granted a position to be an undergraduate research assistant at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicine.uci.edu\/immunology\/about.asp\">UCI Medical School in the Department of Immunology.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/david-richards\">Dr. Richards<\/a> asked me if I would be interested in a Health Sciences Internship, working as an intern in the Anatomy Lab for Spring 2019, I was excited because I loved anatomy when I took it as a Sophomore. I made a special connection with the students in the lab and discovered that I was an excellent leader and teacher. I was pleasantly surprised when Dr. Richards asked me to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3105\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3105 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture3.jpg 484w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><\/a>be a Supplemental Instructor for Anatomy Lecture the following year.<\/p>\n<p>I was also a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chapman_amsa\/\">American Medical Student Association<\/a>, but with a confidence boost in my leadership ability, I applied to be the Public Relations Executive Board Member. As PR for AMSA, I advertise for the club and run their Instagram. We have many fun events that help other pre-med students make vital connections to get involved.<\/p>\n<p>I have seen myself come full circle in four years thanks to the Chapman<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture4.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3106\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3106 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture4.jpg 495w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/crean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2020\/02\/Picture4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/a> community and all of the support I have seen from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/crean\/academic-programs\/undergraduate-programs\/bs-health-sciences\/index.aspx\">Health Sciences Department<\/a>. I started out wondering if medical school would be attainable for me, but I now have higher hopes that I can get in, and mentors by my side to help me along the way.
