Chapman’s
\nDepartment of Physical Therapy<\/a>

\nDr. Steve Cramer<\/a>
\n’s Laboratory in UC Irvine’s Department of Neurology, UC Irvine Health, and the
\nOrange County Stroke Rehab Network<\/a>
\n hosted a very successful fifth annual Stroke Awareness Picnic at the end of May on the UC Irvine campus.
\n <\/p>\n

Sharing Stroke Survivor Successes & Resources
\n<\/strong>
\n
\n
\nThis picnic, which attracted over 300 attendees, promoted discussion about stroke and provided stroke survivors and caregivers a forum to share their success stories. Persons with stroke, friends and family, caregivers, therapists, nurses, physicians and researchers were all invited to participate. Over thirty exhibitors, including stroke support groups, healthcare providers, service providers, and equipment vendors shared helpful information.
\n <\/p>\n

A Spirited Collaboration<\/strong>
\n
\n
\nVolunteers from Chapman and UC Irvine pitched in to bring the event together. Atanasia Mora coordinated registration and led the team of volunteers from the
\nDoctor of Physical Therapy Program<\/a>
\n (DPT), and Sharon Lee was instrumental in coordinating the student effort from Chapman’s
\nCommunication Disorders<\/a>
\n program. Nina Chiu, in collaboration with her team of undergraduates from Dr. Cramer’s lab at UCI, was able to secure corporate donations and grants for the event.
\n <\/p>\n

Superb Student Volunteers<\/strong>
\n
\n
\n“We had over 30 student volunteers from the DPT and [Communication] Disorders programs participate in this year’s picnic,” wrote
\nDr. Alison McKenzie<\/a>
\n, a lead organizer of the picnic and professor of physical therapy at Chapman. “We had lots of positive feedback from the participants and exhibitors. The students did Chapman proud!”
\n <\/p>\n
