{"id":10498,"date":"2017-06-15T08:27:43","date_gmt":"2017-06-15T15:27:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/dodge\/2017\/06\/15\/women-of-chapman-committee-awards-50k-to-student-films\/"},"modified":"2017-06-15T08:27:43","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T15:27:43","slug":"women-of-chapman-committee-awards-50k-to-student-films","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/2017\/06\/15\/women-of-chapman-committee-awards-50k-to-student-films\/","title":{"rendered":"Women of Chapman Committee Awards $50K to Student Films"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Women of Chapman committee awarded four upcoming Dodge College thesis films\u00a0with production funds at its annual pitch lunch held on May 19.\u00a0The Women of Chapman are a group of philanthropic-minded women strongly dedicated to a program of service to Chapman University that has provided over 2 million in funding to Dodge College since 2006 and over $200,000 in funding to undergraduate\u00a0thesis film projects since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The following student projects were awarded funds:<\/p>\n<p><strong>MCCARTHY- $16,000<\/strong><br \/>\nDIRECTOR<strong> | <\/strong>Adam McClaughry<br \/>\nPRODUCER | Bailey Helvie<br \/>\n<em>Hollywood\u2019s new \u201cit-girl\u201d, who is crumbling under the pressures of the entertainment industry, has her career threatened by a particularly determined paparazzi.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE PIANO ROOM- $12,000<\/strong><br \/>\nDIRECTOR<strong> | <\/strong>Lucas Bugbee<br \/>\nPRODUCER | Daniel Dabach<br \/>\n<em>Together, a father and daughter come to terms with the mother\u2019s passing despite a lack of clear communication.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>AMAL- $12,000<\/strong><br \/>\nDIRECTOR<strong> | <\/strong>Nour Oubeid<br \/>\nPRODUCER | Rachel Griswold<br \/>\n<em>When a young Syrian refugee living in America witnesses her mother being discriminated against, she begins to question her cultural identity and her family\u2019s safety.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>REVERIE- $10,000<\/strong><br \/>\nDIRECTOR | Nick Markham<br \/>\nPRODUCER | Hannah Riddle<br \/>\n<em>A paranoid-schizophrenic woman must convince her college-bound daughter not to leave her behind in solitary confinement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nick Markham (BFA\/FP \u201918) threw a curve ball to the committee when\u00a0he delivered his\u00a0pitch slam poetry-style. which incorporates his thoughts on the pitch lunch &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/221618810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on our Vimeo page<\/a>, and read the transcript below.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ode to the Riveters<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I was raised in an all-female household<\/em><br \/>\n<em> when disease stole my father from his life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It was like something you\u2019d see in the movies,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> or only I might think so as movies are my everything:<\/em><br \/>\n<em> They taught me that with great power comes great responsibility,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> that he could\u2019ve been a contender,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> that there is an emerald city for us all to escape.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And when my imaginative and loving father was gone,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> movies became something more:<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That beacon of hope at the end of the tunnel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>My coming of age story came too early.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Movies became films, dreams became a career path,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> and life became the road map to get me there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I chased my dreams to a golden coast<\/em><br \/>\n<em> and took root in Orange, California;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That is the city of Orange, not Orange County,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> but specifically Orange in Orange County,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> at a school that believed in my ability to tell stories.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>They gave me the chance to tell the story of a woman<\/em><br \/>\n<em> who defied the limits of a warped man\u2019s society.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> It was the story of Caresse Crosby, the woman who<\/em><br \/>\n<em> invented the bra and published Hemmingway\u2019s words<\/em><br \/>\n<em> with the odds stacked high against her in 1920\u2019s society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And now I have the chance to tell the story of a woman<\/em><br \/>\n<em> struggling with paranoid schizophrenia.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> It poisons her veins and ripped her away<\/em><br \/>\n<em> from the love of her life, 9 months of labor and 7 years more<\/em><br \/>\n<em> only to be told she is an unfit parent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A muted green uniform brands her with some three digit number<\/em><br \/>\n<em> that means everything and yet nothing to a woman<\/em><br \/>\n<em> who longs only to reunite with her daughter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I never would have had this opportunity without the strong women in my life;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A mother whose faith in me outshined my own,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A sister who kept me humble and pushed me to be better,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A grandmother and aunts all rallying for me to succeed,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Those teachers who taught me the beauty and power of storytelling,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A woman who became my collaborator at that sunny university in Old Town Orange,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> whose resilience and love for honest storytelling swept away my heart<\/em><br \/>\n<em> and inspired me to tell stories that matter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Together we entered a boardroom with a pitch and high hopes,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> nerves-wrecked and with our hearts worn on our sleeves,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> we told our story to our first audience, and from that audience<\/em><br \/>\n<em> we gained a new support system of women,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The Women of Chapman, whose support like a great current<\/em><br \/>\n<em> swept our sails above a tumultuous storm and gave us<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the chance to tell our story the way it needs to be told.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The women in my life gave me unbounding hope,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> and in a time where they still face unfair adversity,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> it is my duty as a storyteller with the power to<\/em><br \/>\n<em> inspire the world with every frame<\/em><br \/>\n<em> to tell stories that honestly reflect the world around me,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> and to embolden people everywhere to believe in<\/em><br \/>\n<em> that brilliant, burning flame that ignites and unites us all.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to the recipients &#8211;
