{"id":1083,"date":"2012-04-13T17:12:21","date_gmt":"2012-04-14T00:12:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/dodge\/2012\/04\/13\/dinner-with-rob-legato-vfx-supervisor\/"},"modified":"2012-04-13T17:12:21","modified_gmt":"2012-04-14T00:12:21","slug":"dinner-with-rob-legato-vfx-supervisor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/2012\/04\/13\/dinner-with-rob-legato-vfx-supervisor\/","title":{"rendered":"Dinner with Rob Legato, VFX Supervisor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday evening, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0499215\/\">Rob Legato<\/a> visited the Folino theater to discuss creating the effects for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0970179\/\"><em>Hugo<\/em><\/a> (one of my favorite 3D films ever!) in the stereoscopic medium with 3D-projected behind-the-scenes footage.\u00a0 Additionally, Rob was here for a delicious dinner in the Fashionable Women of Chapman Rotunda Board Room to meet interested students for a more intimate discussion.\u00a0 Digital Arts Club head Ari Felbowitz attended both, and shares his thoughts below on having the award-winning filmmaker with us.\u00a0 (And check out some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/video\/video.php?v=10150545464651048\">Ari&#8217;s work here<\/a>!) -JP<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><em>Guest Blogger Ari Felbowitz (Digital Arts, &#8217;12)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What impresses me most about Rob Legato is his literal, can-do attitude.\u00a0 In fact, he hates the word &#8220;no.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When someone tells him that something can\u2019t be done, he proves that it can be done.\u00a0 He made a comparison to the moon landing when he said something along the lines of \u201cWhen they wanted to go to the moon they didn\u2019t have the means to get there, but they knew they wanted to go, so they created the means to do it, it\u2019s the same with visual effects and anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As can be seen on IMDB.com he is the VFX supervisor of titles such as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0970179\/\">Hugo<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"\/dodge\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0338751\/\">Aviator<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0161081\/\"><em>What Lies Beneath<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0120338\/\"><em>Titanic<\/em><\/a>, and many other wonderful films such as one of my favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0241527\/\"><em>Harry Potter<\/em><\/a> movies.\u00a0 He also worked on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0499549\/\">Avatar<\/a>, the film widely credited for spurring the 3D revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Most of his lecture focused on the behind the scenes of <em>Hugo<\/em>.\u00a0 He also gave us his back story and great stories from behind the scenes of various projects he has worked on.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed the most fun he has ever had on set was while working on a commercial directed by Martin Scorsese called \u201cThe Key to Reserva\u201d because it was referencing Alfred Hitchcock movies in a comical fashion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"the key to reserva - baaahh..\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YMjFnIiPQCM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rob started off in film and was going into producing.\u00a0 He was fascinated by VFX, but never thought he would get into that field professionally.\u00a0 His perspective changed one day, suddenly, on set:\u00a0 he was working on a car commercial, which required a shot of the actor jumping out of the sun roof of his car and landing in another car.\u00a0 People told him the shot could never be accomplished.\u00a0 He tried various angles and camera tricks, but none worked.<\/p>\n<p>Discouraged, he consulted with other people working on set, and found a simple solution he could accomplish with VFX.\u00a0 Suddenly, people saw him as a person who could problem solve and think in ways others couldn\u2019t on set.\u00a0 Whenever he felt he needed to do something that couldn\u2019t be done, he would find a way to do it.<\/p>\n<p>He said that when we enjoy something in art, no matter what the form is, we should keep it in the back of our minds, because something we like about it may work it&#8217;s way into our work.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, once VFX went all-digital, he was already there working in the digital medium, making him in very high demand &#8211; he was perfectly positioned to leverage his creative past into a productive, future-looking career.<\/p>\n<p>He also had some great stories from working on Hugo, like how he built a revolving slide, or how compositors dropped out of the opening shot of <em>Hugo<\/em> 3 days before the film was due.\u00a0 He also explained that most of the sets you see in <em>Hugo<\/em> are CG, and we were able to see the film stripped of all its VFX magic.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really impressive to behold how much of a film is created and animated in computers;\u00a0 take\u00a0 look for yourself:<\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Martin Scorsese&amp;apos;s Hugo -
