{"id":17665,"date":"2021-03-25T10:51:55","date_gmt":"2021-03-25T17:51:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/dodge\/2021\/03\/25\/dodge-student-selected-for-lena-waithes-inaugural-mentorship-lab-program\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T16:34:51","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T16:34:51","slug":"dodge-student-selected-for-lena-waithes-inaugural-mentorship-lab-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/2021\/03\/25\/dodge-student-selected-for-lena-waithes-inaugural-mentorship-lab-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Dodge Student Selected for Lena Waithe\u2019s Inaugural Mentorship Lab Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_17672\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17672\" style=\"width: 246px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17672\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2021\/03\/Arjun-Yadav-Headshot-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"246\" height=\"294\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Arjun Yadav<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Emmy award-winning screenwriter, producer, and actor Lena Waithe\u2019s company, Hillman Grad Productions, recently announced its inaugural mentorship class of rising creatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">And Chapman\u2019s own Arjun Yadav made the final cut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Arjun, an MFA Producing student, was selected as one of the top five producers for the executive development track out of a total of 4,500 applications. 25 individuals were accepted in total for tracks in writing, acting, and executive development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillmangrad.com\/mentorship-labs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hillman Grad Mentorship Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> strives to connect 25 selected individuals from marginalized communities with networking opportunities and resources to remove barriers to industry access and propel them into their careers in television and film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The mentorship program is a 10-month, tuition-free fellowship, which will feature one-on-one instruction from industry experts, workshops set to enhance originality in generating narratives, and professional development to polish and broaden their creative skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMentorship has always been important to me. The hope is to populate the industry with people that otherwise wouldn\u2019t have access to it,\u201d said Waithe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to meeting the next generation of storytellers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17671\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17671\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17671\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-25-at-10.40.49-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"223\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Emmy award-winning screenwriter, producer, and actor Lena Waithe.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recently, Waithe\u2019s production company also partnered with the job listing company Indeed to provide adequate funding for up-and-coming BIPOC filmmakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indeed will work in collaboration with Hillman Grad for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillmangrad.com\/indeed-rising-voices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rising Voices initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, selecting 10 filmmakers to create short films with a production budget of $100,000 each. The budget, which Waithe calls \u201cunheard of\u201d for rising short film directors, includes an additional $25,000 which will be allocated to the productions to ensure COVID-19 safety measures are followed. Each filmmaker will also earn a $10,000 writing fee for their screenplay submissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The films will be produced by Hillman Grad in partnership with 271 Films. Waithe will work alongside Hillman Grad president of film\/TV Rishi Rajani to act as executive producers and guide the filmmakers. At the conclusion of the program, one filmmaker will be offered a filmmaker-in-residency position at Indeed to continue to produce content with the brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Arjun recalled the elaborate application and interview process he had to go through to be accepted for the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe had gone through a long interview which I was convinced I blew completely. And I was having sleepless nights over possibly missing out on such an incredible opportunity,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, it was all worth it when he finally got the call that he had been selected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He remembers how grateful he felt in that moment, and is most looking forward to getting to work directly with Rishi and his development team.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17673\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17673\" style=\"width: 338px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17673\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2021\/03\/IMG_7395.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17673\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Arjun at NewFilmmakers LA.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a current production and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">development coordinator at Wayfarer Studios, Arjun is ready to continue to produce audacious and thought-provoking films with this opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThrough my stories, I want to spotlight grievances, triumphs and human experiences of the underrepresented, marginalized and diminished voices.
