{"id":19908,"date":"2016-09-23T08:27:42","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T15:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/dodge\/2016\/09\/23\/chapman-students-take-home-silver-and-bronze-at-2016-student-academy-awards\/"},"modified":"2016-09-23T08:27:42","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T15:27:42","slug":"chapman-students-take-home-silver-and-bronze-at-2016-student-academy-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/2016\/09\/23\/chapman-students-take-home-silver-and-bronze-at-2016-student-academy-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapman Students Take Home Silver and Bronze at 2016 Student Academy Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Winners of the<\/span> <u>43rd Student Academy Awards<\/u> <span style=\"color: #000000\">were officially recognized during the ceremony held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on September 22, where Chapman University \/ Dodge College film school students Brian Robau and Brenna Malloy earned silver and bronze medal placements, respectively, in the narrative category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Brian Robau (MFA\/Film Production\u201917) took home the silver for his short film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/itsjustagun\/\"><em>It\u2019s Just a Gun<\/em><\/a> and Brenna Malloy (MFA\/Film Production\u201916) won the bronze for her short film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocketthefilm.com\/index.html\"><em>Rocket<\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Both films are eligible to compete for 2016 Oscars<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0in the Live Action Short Film category.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cThis is a landmark moment for our film school and reflects tremendous credit on the talent of our students and the commitment of our faculty and staff to mentoring them as they develop their creative visions,\u201d says Dean Bob Bassett. \u00a0\u00a0\u201cThese two films in particular effectively tap topics very much in the zeitgeist\u2014how women define themselves and how the prevalence of guns is shaping our society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Brenna Malloy\u2019s <em>Rocket<\/em> tells a bittersweet tale set in the world of 1950&#8217;s dirt track racing. Under the shadow of a legacy traditionally passed down from father to son, Annie Pankratz finds a path to building a destiny all her own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">In addition to directing the film, Malloy wrote the screenplay with Ian Hock. The film stars Lizzie Clarke, Cameron Diskin and Danny Downey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Brian Robau\u2019s <em>It\u2019s Just a Gun<\/em> asks audiences to imagine the lifetime of a gun and all the hands it passes through. \u201cIt&#8217;s Just a Gun\u201d is just one chapter in that story and features Joshua Johnson-Lionel and Claude Sharpe from a script by Daniel Klein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Robau and Malloy\u2019s wins come one year after Daniel Drummond (BFA\/Digital Arts\u201914) became the first Chapman student to win a Student Academy Award, winning the top prize in the Alternative Film category for his inventive film<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drummondvisuals.com\/chiaroscuro\">\u201cChiaroscuro.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Overall, 17 student films were named winners of the 43rd<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/saa\">Student Academy Awards<\/a><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\">competition. The Academy received a record number of entries this year \u2013 1,749 films from 286 domestic and 95 international colleges and universities \u2013 which were voted on by a record number of Academy members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The 2016 winners join the ranks of such past Student Academy Award winners as Pete Docter, Cary Fukunaga, John Lasseter, Spike Lee, Trey Parker and Robert Zemeckis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Student Academy Awards were established in 1972 to provide a platform for emerging global talent by creating
