Okay, in our last discussion (Building a Career, Part 1<\/a>), we talked about the first two steps of building a career after you graduate: landing that all-important first job (whichever one you\u2019re offered) and then working as hard as you can at it \u2013 with a smile.\u00a0 Today we\u2019re going to go from Step One backward to Step Zero\u2026that\u2019s right, backward.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about what you should be doing while you\u2019re in school to prepare for your future career.<\/p>\n

BUILDING A CAREER (PART 2)<\/p>\n

BUIDLING YOUR SKILLS<\/strong>.\u00a0 Despite what you\u2019ve been conditioned to believe during Grades K-12, the most important element of your time in school is NOT your GPA.\u00a0 Your #1 focus while you\u2019re in college should be what you learn<\/em>.\u00a0 Because employers aren\u2019t looking for somebody with a 3.93, they\u2019re looking for somebody who knows how to do something<\/em>.\u00a0 So learn about as many things as you can while you\u2019re in school \u2013 or, to put it another way, build the biggest, deepest personal tool box to draw from.\u00a0 Even if you want to direct and plan to leave the \u201ctechnical stuff\u201d to others, learn it anyway.\u00a0 Learn about the cameras, and editing, and sound.\u00a0 Learn Pro Tools, and Avid.\u00a0 Because your first several jobs won\u2019t be directing, so what will they be?\u00a0 The more stuff you know how to do, the greater the possibilities.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Even if you\u2019re a writer, you\u2019ll need some skills to pay the bills while you hone your craft.\u00a0 So learn about script analysis and doing coverage, because that\u2019s what you may be doing.\u00a0 Or step outside your comfort zone and learn about Avid and editing, because spending time in an editing room, even as a lowly assistant, is one of the best ways to continue learning about writing for the screen while you pull a paycheck.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

INTERNSHIPS.<\/strong>\u00a0 The single best set of connections you can make with the professional world while you\u2019re in school is through your internship(s).\u00a0 This is a free opportunity to fulfill a graduation requirement (internships are required for most majors at Dodge College), begin to build a resume, and start building a network of people who will recommend you for future jobs.\u00a0 Many students find that one of their internships actually leads to a paying gig with the company after graduation.\u00a0 This makes perfect sense \u2013 after all, this company has actually seen you in action, seen how you function in their environment under \u201cgame conditions.\u201d\u00a0 Even if the place you intern doesn\u2019t have an opening for you after graduation, the people you\u2019ve worked with have friends and colleagues who might need someone like you.\u00a0 So forget the fact that you\u2019re \u201cworking for free.\u201d\u00a0 Internships are a golden opportunity.\u00a0 Work your tail off, go the extra mile to prove you\u2019ve got what it takes to be a professional.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

THEY\u2019RE NOT JUST FELLOW PANTHERS, THEY\u2019RE POTENTIAL FUTURE JOB CONNECTIONS.<\/strong>\u00a0 You know those first jobs you have your eye on for when you graduate?\u00a0 Well, somebody usually has them before you.\u00a0 And that somebody is often as not somebody a year or two ahead of you in film school.\u00a0 If they\u2019re smart and hard-working, they will have proved themselves after a year or two and will be ready to move on to Job #2 in their careers.\u00a0 That\u2019s good news for you, because it opens up Job #1.\u00a0 But even better news for you would be if when Mr. or Ms. Older Than You tells the boss they\u2019re moving on (or gets promoted at the same company because they\u2019ve done such a good job), they also say \u201cand I know the perfect person to replace me.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That\u2019s why you want to treat everyone around you in film school well.\u00a0 Be polite.\u00a0 Help them out when you can.\u00a0 Crew on their films.\u00a0 Share knowledge and connections when you can.\u00a0 This should be how you roll throughout your career \u2013 because the more people who say good things about you and your work, the stronger your career will be and easier your job searches will be.<\/p>\n
