\tOver the interterm period of January 2011, 16 American students joined forces with 22 Singaporean students to make 7 short documentaries about the 7 Deadly Sins in Singaporean culture. Each of these shorts presents a unique aspect of Singaporean society, and the ways in which each of these sins emerge through the lens of intimate documentary portraits. The trip also included several days in Malaysia and a few days, for some of the students, in Indonesia. The films include:<\/p>\n \t1) "Wither" (Sloth)<\/p>\n \tLooks into the loss of Chinese Opera in Singaporean culture, and its impact on one couple.<\/p>\n \t2) "Given" (Gluttony)<\/p>\n \tA daughter who's full of faith negotiates her traditional Buddhist parents' disapproval of her Christian tithing.<\/p>\n \t3) "Transit" (Envy)<\/p>\n \tA transgender woman decides whether or not to transition, while coming to terms with her mother's lack of acceptance of her true gender.<\/p>\n \t4) "Maid to Dream" (Pride)<\/p>\n \tAn Indonesian woman escapes her abusive husband and leaves her daughter behind to come to Singapore for a better life, only to find more abuse, finally returning to Indonesia to become the director of an organization working to stop such abuses.<\/p>\n \t5) "No Answer" (Wrath)<\/p>\n \tA young woman comes to terms with her best friend's suicide three months ago, and accepts her own right to live.<\/p>\n \t6) "Dying Faith" (Greed)<\/p>\n \tAn old Buddhist nun in her last days defends the temple she lives in and what her faith stands for.<\/p>\n \t7) "BLOW!" (Lust)<\/p>\n \tA young American man uncovers the truth behind the Singaporean anti-gay law, and realizes something profound about the way different cultures challenge adversity.<\/p>\n \tThere will be a screening at Dodge College's Folino Theater on February 23rd at 7pm, for those who would like to see these films.
