{"id":9296,"date":"2016-10-31T02:19:55","date_gmt":"2016-10-31T09:19:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/dodge\/2016\/10\/31\/austin-film-festival-screenwriting-short-films-bbq-and-dodge\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T16:34:38","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T16:34:38","slug":"austin-film-festival-screenwriting-short-films-bbq-and-dodge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/2016\/10\/31\/austin-film-festival-screenwriting-short-films-bbq-and-dodge\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Film Festival: Screenwriting, Short Films, BBQ, and Dodge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Austin Film Festival takes place every year in mid-October with a strong focus on screenwriting and emphasizing storytelling with screenings, panels, and workshops \u2013 so it\u2019s no surprise that Dodge had no less than 3 short films and one feature script finalist in this year\u2019s event!<\/p>\n<p>As I got to the main hub of the festival, The Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin, I was thrilled to see Dodge represented front and center alongside other films (Kendall Goldberg\u2019s SWIPE RIGHT).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9302 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2016\/10\/Swipe-Right-Postcards-e1477426728195.jpg\" alt=\"austin film festival\" width=\"580\" height=\"773\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was able to attend a number of great shorts screenings and panels on the changing game of distribution and what it takes to put together a feature film these days from the financing standpoint. The first night at the Driskill I was able to network with many screenwriters who were impressed to hear that a Dodge student, Kate Brogden, had entered into the finalist round at the festival for her script SOMETHING\u2019S WRONG WITH PETER \u2013 many professional screenwriters struggled to make it into the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> round or semi-finals, let alone finals. The competition at Austin is stiff and Kate made the cut!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9300\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2016\/10\/kendall_austin.jpg\" alt=\"austin film festival\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kendall\u2019s screening of SWIPE RIGHT at the Galaxy, a quaint old-timey Cineplex, was a resounding success with some of the loudest cheers of the night coming for her film!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9301\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2016\/10\/ListeningBox_AustinWestin.jpg\" alt=\"austin film festival\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Austin and Westin Ray\u2019s screening in the unique Digital Series category of their film THE LISTENING BOX also went over well with audiences who directed many questions to their team, including their \u201cdreamy\u201d lead actor who some of you may recognize from one of Dodge\u2019s most successful short films, INTO THE SILENT SEA which premiered at Telluride Film Festival back in 2013. Paulina Bugembe\u2019s THE HOMECOMING also played the festival in another screening.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9299\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/dodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2016\/10\/BBQ-Austin.jpg\" alt=\"austin film festival\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t leave Austin without trying some of their world-famous barbecue\u2013 this is from the food truck La Barbecue, highly recommended.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to all of the students involved in this year\u2019s Austin Film Festival and make sure to get your thesis submissions ready for next year!
